VICTOR, N.Y. — A historic tree that stood for nearly 300 years in Victor was toppled by strong winds during a storm on Monday night. The tree, located outside the Valentown Historical Society, was a significant part of the area’s history.
Kathryn White, president of the Victor Historical Society, said, “The tree was actually the anchor for this whole site. It was here when only the Senecas were here, and it was Seneca territory…not exactly, but around 1735 or earlier that this tree was here.”
Erika McGraw, vice president of the society, expressed her feelings about the loss. “Just sadness. Just shock and sadness. It’s just sad to see a piece of history gone. Even if it’s just taken by nature,” said McGraw.
White also shared her personal connection to the tree. “Well, it was like a friend to me. I mean, I had a very much of an attachment to it. I knew that it was its time…everybody drives by, and they’re asking, where did it go?” she said.
In response to the loss, the society is exploring ways to recreate the tree. “We have made contact with an arborist who is a cultivator, and we may be able to have it either grafted or rooted from the tips of branches, which would be a clone, what they call a clone in the tree industry,” White said.
The society plans to transform the fallen tree’s stump into a little free library for the community to enjoy.
