Arizona Wildcats wide receiver Tre Spivey only has 11 receptions this season, but three have been for 45 or more yards and six have resulted in him finding the end zone.
The redshirt sophomore had 14 receptions last season at Kansas State, but his long was only 26 yards and he only scored once.
At 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, Spivey is large at his position, but his coaches find that his physical tools have been activated by a mindset of power and strength.
“There’s also a mentality that he brings with it, because there’s lots of guy that have physical tools to break tackles or make people miss or whatever that is,” head coach Brent Brennan said Monday. “Tre absolutely plays to who he is, and you like that kind of mentality and that aggression when the ball is in his hands.”

Arizona's Tre Spivey 57-yard touchdown part of blowout win vs. Colorado
Spivey’s two longest receptions have come in his two most recent games. In Week 8 against Houston, he had in a 70-yard touchdown catch, and then followed that with a 57-yard touchdown just one minute into the team’s Week 10 matchup at Colorado.
Physically, Spivey is similar to another former Wildcat, Tetairoa McMillan (6-foot-5, 212 pounds). Both players came in with physical tools, but wide receiver coach Bobby Wade helped with the mental and technical understanding of how to best take advantage of their physicality.
“I think what’s developed is his confidence within (his speed),” Wade said. “What he’s hearing in his head is about ‘finish, finish, finish.’ And there’s some technique to it.
“It’s really not much different honestly to what the conversation was with (Tetairoa McMillan) when I first got here. That was a major challenge for him too. … The biggest point was that you are fast enough to do this and you have got to believe in yourself to be able to get that done and just trust it. And that’s what Tre has been able to do.”
Quarterback Noah Fifita’s primary targets this season through the air have been Javin Whatley and Kris Hutson. But while Spivey has nearly 20 fewer receptions than each of them — 33 and 29 for Whatley and Hutson, respectively — his six touchdown receptions lead the team.
Even without being the No. 1 option on the team, Spivey has used his time at Arizona to grow as a receiver, which Brennan thinks reflects well on the program and culture they’ve created.
“It’s been fun to see his process of development since he’s been here,” Brennan said. “I think that’s something that’s been really clear. I think Coach Wade has done a fantastic job with him. … He told Coach Doege after the game and then he told the offense yesterday, in the offensive side of the ball meeting, he is having the most fun he’s ever had playing football. And I think that speaks a lot to the experience he’s having here at Arizona.”
