CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Three North Carolina Republicans say they are demanding that NC Governor Josh Stein send the National Guard to Charlotte, while Gov. Stein maintains local law enforcement is the best equipped to tackle local crime.
On Wednesday, Representatives Mark Harris (NC-08), Pat Harrigan (NC-10), and Chuck Edwards (NC-11) sent a letter to the governor asking for the State National Guard to be deployed in Charlotte to help address violence in the Queen City.
This letter comes after a request from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police, also asking for a local Guard deployment.
“The amount of crime and the amount of issues that are going on, it is not safe to police our streets with the staffing that we have,” Dan Redford, president of the local FOP, told Queen City News following the request. “From a crime perspective, I understand that crime is down, but the perception from the public is that it’s not; obviously, they’re the ones we have to listen to."
How does crime in Charlotte compare to cities where the National Guard has been deployed?According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, overall crime is down 8% and violent crime is down 20% in the first nine months of 2025 compared to last year. However, Reps. Harris, Harrigan and Edwards voice a concern over a "growing violence crisis".
They cite an FOP report stating that homicides in the Uptown area have increased by 200% despite the overall homicide rate in the city being down by 24%.
“Governor Stein is deaf to the desperate pleas of Charlotte's police and residents,” stated Rep. Harris. “He refuses reinforcements to crush the violent crime surge—exposing him and his party as pro-crime Democrats who coddle criminals while ignoring victims. That's why my colleagues and I are fighting for millions of North Carolinians, demanding we reclaim the Queen City. Governor Stein: Stop stalling—send in the Guard now."

"That is why Governor Stein has been working to expand our ranks of well-trained law enforcement officers. He has called on the General Assembly to fund his plan to extend raises and recruitment and retention bonuses to law enforcement and make investments in mental health to keep everyone safe.”
