NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — Nearly 60,000 runners crossed the finish line of the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday. One of them is our very own Taylor Liberti, the content desk manager here at News10NBC.

I sat down with her for a debrief of her first marathon. Liberti said she wanted to prove to herself that she could do physically and mentally challenging things.

“It’s as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. But, it’s also as difficult as putting one foot in front of the other.”

Liberti and her best friend from college decided to but the goal on their bucket list in November 2023. They started with a 5k, then 10k, completed a few half marathons, and then started training last November. One year later, they finished the 26.2-mile course.

“I would tell anyone in this newsroom that, ‘You can do a marathon,'” Liberti said. “If you want to do something you can do it.”

As for taking on the distance again, she shared mixed feelings about running another marathon. “That’s what everyone’s asking me and I don’t know! It’s like the seven stages of grief,” she said.

“In the middle, let’s say mile 16, 17, I was like, ‘I always wanna feel this feeling, I can’t wait to do this again,'” said Liberti.

Liberti’s longest run before the marathon was 16 miles.

“To be honest with you, miles 1-17 and 18 were euphoric,” she said.

“You start to slow down a little bit, start to feel some pain in your knees, your hips, your feet,” Liberti said. “Mile 21, a brick wall, it just hits you.”

With five miles to go, it took every last ounce to cross the finish line.

“I basically limped from mile 22 to mile 26, which was the most humbling experience,” she said. “You know, I can’t quit then.”

Now, after a few years of working towards that goal, she has the goods to show for it.

“The really cool thing about the medal is if you turn it parallel, you can see the elevation profile of the race,” she said. “Which, if the race didn’t have a lot of elevation, they wouldn’t put it on the medal. So it’s kind of a flex.”

So, Liberti’s got that over most of us here in the newsroom, we’ll see who else takes on the challenge. I can tell you, it won’t be me.
