In case San Diego soccer fans have not had enough of Portland, San Diego Wave FC gets its crack at the City of Roses on Sunday.

The Wave takes on the Thorns at Portland’s Providence Park the same day that San Diego FC plays its fourth straight match against the Timbers. Both games are do or die.

SD Wave is returning to the playoffs – the club missed out in 2024 –  with a chance to get revenge against the team that dashed its championship aspirations during its inaugural season in 2022.

That was the year that the Wave finished third, behind second-place Portland, giving the Thorns home-field advantage in a match that was decided in the 93rd minute with a goal from forward Crystal Dunn.

The Thorns ended up lifting the trophy that season after defeating the Kansas City Current in the NWSL championship game.

San Diego, now the sixth seed, hopes to advance to the semifinals for a third time in its four-year existence while also preventing Portland from getting a chance to become league champions for the fourth time.

The two sides faced each other twice during the 2025 regular season with both matches ending in a 1-1 draw as Portland scored late goals. One was on a controversial penalty kick call in the 98th minute on May 10 at Snapdragon Stadium.

SD Wave did have a chance to finish as the third seed and host the match.

Portland would have fallen to the sixth seed if the Wave had come out with a victory over Kansas City – which earned the NWSL’s top seed in the playoffs – in last weekend’s regular season finale.

The Wave have had quite the rollercoaster ride including setting a new club record of eight-straight road wins that came to an end on Oct. 5 in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Washington Spirit. San Diego fired assistant coach Jack Jensen three days later, with the team, led by head coach Jonas Eidevall, then winning back-to-back matches over the Houston Dash and the Chicago Stars by a combined scoreline of 9-3.

If San Diego manages to get by the Thorns Sunday, it will take on the winner of Saturday’s Washington Spirit and Racing Louisville game with the opportunity to host the next round if Louisville can pull off the upset.

The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 15-16, with the final to follow Nov. 22.
