Looking to make his way from the mountains of Albuquerque to the shoreline of Palo Alto, Soren Carlson has given his verbal commitment to swim for the Stanford Cardinal in the fall of 2027.
“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Stanford University! I would like to thank God, my family, and friends for their support throughout this journey. I would also like to thank Coach Jim, Coach Elise, and all of the other coaches who have helped me get to where I am today. Finally, a huge thank you to Coach Dan and Coach Mike for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO CARD!! “
As a freshman, two years ago, Carlson swimming for Albuquerque Academy earned two top-8 finishes at the New Mexico State Championships, placing 4th in the 50 free (22.22) and 5th in the 100 (48.71). He opened the meet anchoring the 200 medley relay to a silver medal splitting 21.54, and finished his day with a gold medal in the 200 Free Relay, where he was just .06 slower splitting 21.60.
A year later it was all gold for Carlson as he swept his individual events and helped anchor two relays to titles. In the 200 Medley he anchored in 20.43 teaming with Pierce McShane, Shep Camp, Jack Yu to stop the clock at 1:32.93, winning by over five seconds. Individually he set then PBs in both the 50 and 100 free winning in times with time 20.77 (his first time under 21) and 45.34 respectively. He ended the meet with a 45.57 100 free as his team posted a winning time of 3:11.69. All told Albuquerque Academy won nine events collecting 356.5 points, over a 100 ahead of La Cueva’s 220.
Carlson kept up his fine form from the high school season into spring as swimming for Charger Aquatics at the Sectionals meet in Austin, the New Mexico native set PBs in the 50/100/200 frees. In the 50, he posted his second sub-21 second time as he finished 20th overall with a time of 20.75. In the 100, he broke 45 for the first time in prelims, stopping the clock at 44.98, which was good for 10th. In the finals, being scratched into the A-final, Carlson finished 8th overall at 45.06. In the 200 free, he not only broke 1:40 for the first time but his prelims swim of 1:39.62 was his first occasion under 1:41. He continued his assault on his record book as he went 1:38.94 in finals to finish 13th overall.
A successful summer long course season saw Carlson win the 100 and 200 free at the Western Zone Senior Championships, as he set new PBs of 52.26 and 1:55.53, respectively. He was a little off in the 50, finishing 10th with a time of 24.31, but had already set a PB this season, going 24.28 at the Sacramento stop of the Pro Swim Series in April.
Best SCY Times:
50 Free – 20.75 100 Free – 44.98 200 Free – 1:38.94Carlson still has most of his junior year and all of senior year of high school seasons before he joins the Dan Schemmel led program in the fall of 2027. In their first year in the ACC, Stanford finished 2nd behind former Pac-12 rival California, scoring 1065 points to Cal’s 1271.5. Stanford also finished 2nd best among ACC schools at the 2025 Men’s NCAA championships, as they earned 216 points, placing 8th overall, one spot ahead of NC State, who were right behind them at ACCs as well.
It took a 19.41, 42.78 and 1:34.41 to earn a second swim at ACCs, which are all faster than Carlson’s current PBs, but as mentioned, the New Mexican still has two years to improve his times. By the time Carlson arrives at The Farm, the Cardinal will have lost their top finishers in the 50 and 100 as both Rafael Gu and Jonathan Tan, (13th and 14th in the 50), and Andrei Minakov and Andres Dupont (8th and 9th in the 100) will have exhausted their eligibility.
Stanford brought in SwimSwam’s #6 ranked class this year led by strong freestyles Ethan Ekk and Jason Zhao and their 2026 class is chock-full of strong sprinters with Maxwell Stanislaus and Nathan Foucu leading the way.
In Carlson’s class, Stanford seems to be making an even bigger splash as they have commitments from four of the top 20 in SwimSwam’s Way too Early Recruit Rankings. Set to join Carlson in Palo Alto are #2 ranked Luke Vatev, #10 ranked Owen Ekk, #15 ranked Connor Christopherson, #19 ranked Yi Zheng, and Honorable mention Jacob Bougaieff.
