For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Turkish swimmer Majdouline Zahir has announced her verbal commitment to compete for the University of Nebraska beginning in the fall of 2026.
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Nebraska ! I would like to thank my family, my friends and my coaches for their endless support. I would also like to thank Coach Pablo and Coach Pat for giving me this incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to be a part of the Husker family ! Go Big Red !!!”
A native of Istanbul, Zahir will be coming to Lincoln from across the Atlantic to study and swim next fall. Zahir currently trains with ENKA Sports Club in Turkey, where she specializes in freestyle, particularly excelling at the distance events.
Zahir turned in a series of top performances at the Turkey Long Course National Team Selection meet (LCM) in December. She took 3rd in both the 400 free (4:22.41) and 800 free (9:02.28) and placed 4th in the 1500 free (17:19.00), clocking new lifetime bests in all three races.
She improved upon those times even further over the rest of the season. At the 6th International Edirne Cup and Turkish Junior, Youth and Open Long Course National Team Trials in May, Zahir posted new personal best times in the 800 free (8:57.81) and 1500 free (17:09.51), placing 3rd in both events. She also finished 5th in the 400 free in 4:22.45, just off of her lifetime best.
At the Turkish National Team Trials in May, Zahir knocked another six seconds off of her time in the 1500, claiming the runner-up spot in 17:03.54. A few weeks later, she lowered her time in the 800 free once again, posting a time of 8:53.43 at the Turkish National Team Selection Meet to knock over four seconds off of her lifetime best.
Best Times LCM (SCY Conversions)
200 free – 2:08.70 (1:53.06) 400/500 free – 4:22.41 (4:54.01) 800/1000 free – 8:53.43 (9:57.68) 1500/1650 free – 17:03.54 (16:43.47)A Division I program, Nebraska competes in the Big Ten Conference; the women’s team placed 10th at the Big Ten Conference Championships last season before sending two athletes on to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships, where they finished 34th overall.
To earn a second swim at the 2025 conference championships, it took times of 1:47.11/4:46.00 in the 200/500 free, while it took a time of 16:32.23 in the 1650 free to score within the top 24. Based on her current time conversions, Zahir would land outside of the finals cutoffs in each of her top events, but it remains to be seen exactly what type of swims she can produce in short course yards. On the team itself, Zahir would have ranked 2nd in the 1000 free, 4th in the 1650 free and 5th in the 500 free last year, but with almost a full season to go before she arrives, the roster could shake out differently.
The list of commits for Nebraska’s class of 2030 currently includes Mylie Bradley, Jana Hartel, Georgia Holgate, Dominika Borkowska and Meredith Peyton, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
