We reported last year that Loughborough coaching mainstay Ian Hulme would be leaving his post after the 2024 Olympic Games and we now know where he is headed.

Hulme has been revealed as the new Head Coach of Swimming at the Western Australia Institute of Sport.

As posted on social media recently, WAIS said, “We’re delighted to welcome Ian Hulme as our new Head Coach of Swimming!  With extensive international experience and a proven track record in elite athlete development, Ian and the larger team are charging ahead with ambition, precision and passion, and a vision to elevate Western Australia’s swimming to new heights “Success to me, is about more than performance. It’s about creating an environment where people feel valued and inspired to give their best. When athletes leave the program better prepared for life, as leaders, teammates and humans, that to me is real success, and I believe that when the culture is right, the performances tend to take care of themselves.”

Hulme spent over a decade at Loughborough University, serving as Head Coach for seven of those years. Under his leadership the program produced more than 100 international medals in the last cycle alone. His coaching resume includes personal involvement in over 50 international podium finishes across World, European and Commonwealth competitions, as well as a coaching role at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

He worked mostly with students (undergraduate and postgraduate), including Swedish sisters Louise Hansson and Sophie Hansson. It was through them that Hulme was named to the Swedish coaching staff for the 2022 World Short Course Swimming Championships, 2023 World Aquatics Championships and 2023 European Aquatics Championships.

He was also on the English staff at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, and the British staff at the 2018 European Championships and 2017 World Junior Championships, among other international appointments.

On his move to Western Australia, Hulme stated, “This state feels like a sleeping giant.  There’s so much talent here, and I’m excited about building stronger pathways from grassroots to the international stage. WAIS has all the ingredients – athlete-centred coaching, a values-driven culture, and a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, it’s a privilege to be part of that.” (WAIS)

The program has “a strong culture and legacy. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity leading a group of athletes towards a home Olympics and I feel extremely honoured to be in this position.”

He continued, “Success to me, is about more than performance. It’s about creating an environment where people feel valued and inspired to give their best. When athletes leave the program better prepared for life, as leaders, teammates and humans, that to me is real success, and I believe that when the culture is right, the performances tend to take care of themselves.” (WAIS)

The WAIS Head Coach role was vacated by Ben Higson who left to return to his past training home of the University of Stirling after Steven Tigg left the role to become the Aquatics GB Head Coach.
