Mater Lakes Girls, Boys Among Team Winners At Florida 2A Region Meets ...Middle East

A recap of all four Florida Class 2A region meets. The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for this weekend’s state meet, along with the next best eight overall times among the four regions.

Region 1

Team winners: Girls: Eastside, 326; Boys: Bishop Kenny, 383.

Overview: The Eastside girls team prevailed by 12 points over Stanton College Prep, while Bishop Kenny was 81 points ahead of runner-up Eastside. The Eastside girls’ team was led by Elise Panna, who won the 100 free and 200 IM and swam anchor for both the winning 200 free and 400 free relay teams. Fernandina Beach freshman Skylar Revere also won two events in personal best times, the 200 free and 500 free. Eastside was seventh at last year’s state meet. In the boys’ competition, Bishop Kenny swept all three relay events and was led by Alabama commit Carter Wright, who won the 50 free, 100 back and was anchor on winning teams in the both the 200 free and 400 free relays. Bishop Kenny finished as the state runner-up last season, finishing just nine points behind champion Mater Lakes.

Team winners: Girls — Satellite, 403; Boys — Satellite, 465.

Overview: Satellite swept the titles with ease, as no other school accumulated 300 points in either gender. The Satellite girls team finished 24th at last year’s state meet, while the boys finished in a tie for ninth. In the girls’ competition, Elena Rollen of Rockledge (200 IM, 100 free), Morgan Gibson of Crystal River (500 free, 100 breast) and Lara Braganza of The Villages (200 free, 100 fly), a West Florida commit, each won two events. In the boys’ event, Ohio State commit and Satellite senior Sawyer Davis won the 50 free and 100 free, and was a part of winning teams in the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Vanguard juniors Alex Gonzalez (50 free, 100 free) and Parker Stever (200 free, 500 free) each won two events also.

Region 3

Team winners: Girls — Holy Names, 361; Boys — Estero, 302.

Overview: In the girls’ competition, three-time defending state champion Holy Names won going away and seems in good form in pursuit of a fourth straight state title. Catherine Dieffenthaller led the way for Holy Names, winning the 200 IM and 100 breast. Barron Collier freshman Abi Burke was another individual standout, winning the 200 free and 100 free, and being a part of winning teams in the 200 free and 400 free relays. The boys’ competition was much closer, with Estero finishing just five points ahead of runner-up Naples. Estero clinched the title with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay. Naples finished fourth in the event. Nicholas Kirby of Estero (200 free, 500 free), Joey Campagnola of Seminole (100 back, 100 fly) and Jackson Healy of Seminole (50 free, 100 free) each won two events.

Team winners: Girls — Mater Lakes, 381; Boys — Mater Lakes, 387.5.

Overview: The Mater Lakes boys team is the defending state champion, and it will go for a repeat this weekend on the strength of a great individual performance from senior Surfiel Santiago, who won the 200 free and 500 free in personal best times (see below). He was also the anchor on the winning 400 free relay team for Mater Lakes. The other multi-event winner was Jake Kotz-Agramonte of Mast Academy, who won the 50 free and 100 free in a personal best time. In the girls’ event, Mater Lakes, last year’s state runner-up, was led by sophomore Jianna Amores. She won the 100 fly (53.73) and 100 back (57.22), and was a part of winning teams in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Emma Han of Dreyfoos School (200 IM, 100 breast), and Liliana Novak of American Heritage School (50 free, 100 free), each won two events.
