Merz invites al-Sharaa to Germany to discuss deportations ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, to visit Germany to discuss the deportation of Syrian nationals with criminal records, Reuters reported on Monday, November 3.

Merz said he invited President al-Sharaa to Germany to address the deportation of Syrians who have criminal records in Germany. “We will, of course, continue deporting criminals to Syria. That is the plan, and we will now implement it in a very practical way,” he told reporters.

Merz added that Germany also seeks to help stabilize Syria and said he intends to discuss with al-Sharaa how the two sides can cooperate on these files.

“I will say it again, the war in Syria is over, and there are no longer reasons for asylum in Germany,” Merz said.

Laying the groundwork for removals

On October 12, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the government intends to review asylum claims submitted by Syrians in preparation for deporting those whose applications have been rejected, with priority given to re-examining rejected claims filed by employable young Syrian men, according to the German newspaper Bild.

The paper said the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees will resume processing Syrian asylum applications after years of being frozen due to the war in Syria, which has granted most Syrian refugees in Germany temporary protection since 2012.

Dobrindt, of the Christian Social Union (CSU), said his ministry is working to reach an agreement with the Syrian government that would allow deportations to be carried out. He noted that the first phase would target criminals, followed by additional phases that include other categories of Syrians.

He added that authorities will revoke asylum from Syrians who return to their country after receiving protection in Germany, considering such returns evidence that “the reasons for asylum have ceased.”

Deportation of a Syrian family accused of crimes

On October 20, the German press agency DPA reported that German authorities deported a Syrian family of 20 who had been living in Stuttgart to Syria after pressure from local authorities.

Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of Justice said the so-called “dangerous foreigners task force” ended the family’s stay through a “monitored and organized departure” after dozens of complaints and criminal charges.

Justice Minister Marion Gentges said 13 family members left over the weekend and four more left last summer, bringing the total to 17, most of whom are known to police.

According to the agency, members of the family, who hail from Aleppo (northern Syria), were implicated in at least 160 crimes, including assaults, thefts, and attempted murders.

Stuttgart Mayor Frank Nopper said forcing the family to leave “was the right and very necessary step,” adding, “We must not accept that peaceful coexistence in our cities is put at risk, or that criminals and persons obliged to leave continue to receive social benefits.”

While current laws do not permit forced deportations to Syria, the justice minister explained that authorities are working to “activate the possibility of deportation,” insisting that this approach has begun to show concrete results “because criminals understand they will be the first to be deported once the measure is activated.”

Gentges added that increasing legal pressure has pushed several offenders to accept “organized voluntary departure,” saying this “protects the state’s cities and reinforces the rule of law.”
