This Popular Cheese Packs the Most Calories—and Registered Dietitians Warn Against Overdoing It ...Saudi Arabia

Whether you’re watching your weight or just trying to eat healthy, it makes sense to keep a loose eye on calories. The exact number of calories you need varies based on factors like how active you are and your personal metabolism, but some foods tend to be better than others when you’re calorie-counting. Unfortunately, a big one to be wary of is cheese.“Cheese is fairly calorie-dense because of its fat content, so a little goes a long way,” says Jessica Cording, RD, the author of The Little Book of Game-Changers. “It’s easy to eat more than you realize, especially with soft spreads or melted dishes.”When you’re building out your meals, it’s best to focus on making sure they contain protein, fat, healthy carbohydrates and fiber, according to Cording. This combination will help to give you the most nutrients while filling you up, lowering the odds you’ll end up overeating, she explains. You don’t need to weed out cheese entirely if you’re counting calories—you just need to be smart about how much and how often you eat it, according to Keri Gans, RDN, author of The Small Change Diet. “Cheese can be nutritious, providing protein and calcium, but it’s also calorie-dense due to its fat content,” she says. “Because it’s easy to eat more than a small serving, especially when paired with crackers, bread and/or wine, those calories and saturated fat can add up rather quickly.”If you still want to have cheese in your life, but would rather cut back on calories, dietitians agree that there’s one cheese, in particular, to scale back on.Related: This Is the Worst Type of Cheese for Heart Health, According to a Cardiologist

Which Popular Cheese Packs the Most Calories?

If Brillat-Savarin isn’t in your regular rotation, dietitians still recommend scaling back on soft, creamy cheeses like Brie, burrata and mascarpone. “Soft, creamy cheeses like this tend to pack more calories per ounce than harder or lower-fat varieties,” explains Gans.

If you’re a triple cream cheese fan, dietitians stress that you don’t need to remove it from your diet entirely. Just try to be more mindful of when and how much of it you eat, says Beth Warren, RD, CDN, founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living Real Life with Real Food.“Cheese fits into a healthy diet when portions stay balanced and intentional,” Warren says. She suggests thinking of cheese as a garnish, not the main ingredient. “Sprinkle it for flavor instead of layering it on,” she recommends.

Collingwood suggests doing your best to keep portions small (about one ounce) and pairing your cheese with lighter, less calorie-dense foods like fruits and vegetables.
