Andrew Mountbatten Windsor will be stripped his honorary rank of vice-admiral, Defence Secretary John Healey has confirmed, saying the Government was “working to remove” it.
The rank, which Andrew was awarded on his 55th birthday in 2015, is his last remaining honorary military title.
He handed back the others in 2022 over his connections with the convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Healey said the Government was being “guided by the decisions and judgments the King has made.”
“In defence, it’s exactly the same,” he said.
“And we’ve seen Andrew surrender the honorary positions he’s had throughout the military, and guided again by the King, we are working now to remove that last remaining title of vice-admiral that he has.”
Questions over military medals
In an interview on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Healey was asked about the possibility Andrew could lose his military medals, which include the campaign medal he received for his service in the Falklands War.
Healey said: “I don’t have an update for you on that, but just as with his vice-admiral rank and title, we would be guided by the decisions the King makes.”
The former duke holds a number of military medals, the most notable of which is the South Atlantic Medal, with Rosette, which he was awarded in 1982 for his service in the Falklands War as a helicopter pilot.
The Duke of York’s service during the Falklands War as a helicopter pilot is recognised with his South Atlantic Medal 1982 with Rosette.
He also holds the Canadian Forces Decoration, the New Zealand Commemoration Medal and a Naval Long Service and Good Conduct medal.

Andrew has been associated with the Royal Navy since 1979, when he began officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.
He subsequently served as a helicopter pilot and was part of the task force deployed to retake the Falklands following the Argentinian invasion in 1982.
He ended his active naval career in 2001 with the rank of commander, but later received honorary promotions including to vice-admiral in 2015.
Ministry of Defence sources said they expected the process of removing Andrew’s rank to be completed “in short order”, PA Media reported.
They added that they were examining whether Andrew would revert to the rank of commander, which he achieved during his active military service, or if he would lose his naval rank completely.
The military titles he has already returned
In 2022, the-then prince returned most of his military titles and royal patronages to the Queen, after he failed have a sexual assault civil case brought by Virginia Giuffre thrown out of court.
At the time Andrew held eight honorary British military titles, including the role of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, one of the most senior infantry regiments in the British Army.
He had been due to be promoted to Admiral on his 60th birthday in 2020, but asked to defer this after stepping back from public duties in 2019.
A ‘blow’ to Andrew
The move follows the King’s decision to strip his brother of his peerages and the title of prince on Thursday amid the continuing fallout of the Epstein scandal.
Andrew’s Duke of York title has already been removed from the Roll of Peerages.
Royal author and journalist Valentine Low told Laura Kuenssberg that the move to lose his final military title will be a “blow” to Andrew.
“Royals, and particularly Andrew, are very proud and determined to hang onto military titles,” he said.
On Sunday, Donald Trump said he feels “badly” for the royal family amid the continuing fallout over Mountbatten Windsor.
Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One, the US president was asked about the King’s decision to strip his brother of his peerages and the title of prince.
“It’s a terrible thing that’s happened to the (royal) family,” Trump said.
“That’s been a tragic situation. It’s too bad. I feel badly for the family.”
