Big 12 football standings update: ASU clings to shot at conference championship game ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Through Week 10, BYU is the lone Big 12 football team without a blemish after a bye and Arizona State remains in the hunt for the title game after holding off Iowa State on the road.

Cincinnati, who had entered Saturday 5-0 in Big 12 play, got trampled 45-14 at Utah in primetime and Houston picked up its second conference loss, as West Virginia got its first conference win of the season on the road.

Noah Fifita throws 4 touchdowns as Arizona earns decisive win vs. Colorado

ASU (6-3, 4-2 in Big 12) also secured at least one postseason game past the Territorial Cup against Arizona, its sixth win guaranteeing a bowl game appearance. The Sun Devils are currently projected by ESPN to play in the Sun Bowl, which has historically matched up teams in the ACC and Pac-12.

Speaking of Arizona (5-3, 2-3 in Big 12), the Wildcats put an end to their three-game skid with a dominant 52-17 win at Colorado, as they sprinted out to a 38-7 lead at halftime in Boulder. Quarterback Noah Fifita threw four touchdown passes on 11-of-19 passing to no interceptions, with the latest outing coming on the heels of a nearly perfect 24-for-26 game at Houston the week prior.

With that said, let’s take a peek at key games and storylines to watch for down the stretch.

BYU has gauntlet ahead

The BYU Cougars (8-0, 5-0 in Big 12) have survived test after test this season, from a three-point win at Colorado to begin their 2025 conference slate to a double overtime victory over Arizona to a 24-21 win in the Holy War against Utah.

However, after a bye week, BYU may be entering its toughest stretch yet.

The Bear Bachmeier-led Cougars travel to Lubbock to face No. 13 Texas Tech on Saturday before facing TCU at home and Cincinnati on the road.

BYU’s ability to run the football with the second-most rushing touchdowns (21) and rushing yards per game (216.6) only behind Utah has it able to outlast its opponents, as time of possession has also been a strength (third in Big 12, 32:18 per game).

That piece of its game will be under fire right away at the Red Raiders, as Texas Tech is the top conference team in rushing defense, only allowing 2.4 yards per carry and its 74.6 yards per game is nearly 50 yards fewer than the second-stoutest defense in TCU’s 120.1.

Bachmeier must continue to keep the ball out of opponents’ hands, the QB only having thrown three interceptions on 201 attempts, and a pair of top-15 Big 12 receivers in Chase Roberts (third) and Parker Kingston (11th) both have more than 30 receptions and 500 yards.

With Texas Tech and Cincinnati ahead of ASU, an undefeated BYU through this stretch wouldn’t be the worst thing for a shot at making the conference title game.

ASU’s Jeff Sims to man QB rest of way without Sam Leavitt

Senior Jeff Sims got his first win as the Sun Devils’ starting quarterback on Saturday at Iowa State in relief of Sam Leavitt, who coach Kenny Dillingham said will undergo season-ending surgery on his foot.

With true freshman Cam Dyer backing up the former backup, Sims is set to be ASU’s starter the rest of the season with West Virginia at home, Colorado on the road and the Territorial Cup against Arizona to leave his legacy in Tempe.

He rushed for 228 yards and two scores on 29 carries, with the yardage and carry totals both being career highs (128 yards at Georgia Tech in 2021, 21 carries at ASU in 2025).

Dillingham said postgame Saturday on X that Sims is “what’s right with college football,” and the athletic senior will have excellent chances to continue using his legs against a pair of middling to bottom rushing defenses in West Virginia (9th, 151.4 YPG) and Colorado (Last, 215.8 YPG).

Rivalry game could mean even more

ASU-Arizona always means the world to the programs it represents, but this year could keep the Sun Devils’ title game hopes on life support (if they’re even still alive).

With it at Mountain America Stadium this year — a place that has experienced sellouts each and every home game — ASU will get plenty of support from an “activated Valley” but Arizona in its second year under the leadership of Brent Brennan has shown definite improvement on both sides of the ball, as it’s averaging 34.1 points per game (6th in Big 12) and surrendering 19.9 (5th).

The likely Sims vs. Fifita QB matchup will be a dual-threat lover’s delight and a shot at a Big 12 Championship game return will put everything on the top for the Sun Devils.
