Arizona swept the men’s and women’s dual meets against TCU and SMU this weekend, beating both teams by nearly 100 points while SMU came out on top of TCU.

Women’s Recap

The Arizona women won all four relays over the two day meet, along with a few individual events.

They started with a win in the 400 medley relay with the team of Lila Lillie (53.89), Eleni Gewalt (58.92), Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhanghah (52.93), and Riley Botton (49.34) swimming 3:35.08 to take the event by just eight hundredths over SMU’s 3:35.16.

Julia Wozniak, the anchor of Arizona’s ‘B’ relay had the fastest freestyle split in the field at 48.22 and Jimena Leal’s 53.35 to lead off SMU’s ‘A’ was the fastest backstroke split.

Day One ended with the 200 freestyle relay, which was won by the Wildcats in 1:29.88 with the team of Patricija Kondraskaite (23.00), Riley Botton (22.14), Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhanghah (22.94), and Julia Wozniak (21.80).

The Arizona 200 medley relay team was similar to the 400 medley relay with Lila Lillie leading off in 24.86, Eleni Gewalt swimming breaststroke at 27.74, and Riley Botton on the freestyle leg in 21.86. The only difference was Patricija Kondraskaite’s on fly, splitting 24.30. They swam 1:38.76 to win by about half-a-second over their ‘B’ team.

Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhanghah had the fastest fly split in the field with her 23.53 on Arizona’s ‘B’ relay and SMU’s Izzy Krantzcke had the fastest breaststroke split in 27.66 on their 3rd place relay.

The Wildcats finished the meet with a win in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay with Patricija Kondraskaite (49.61), Julia Wozniak (49.51), Riley Botton (48.57), Kayman Neal (49.03) swimming 3:16.72 to win by a little more than a second over SMU.

Chloe Corbin’s 48.48 on SMU’s relay was the fastest split in the field, helping the team to a time of 3:18.17.

Riley Botton won the 50 free in 22.54 for Arizona, just off the 22.29 mark she swam as her season best in the beginning of October.

Julia Wozniak took the other sprint free event for the Wildcats with her 48.53 in the 100 free to touch four tenths ahead of teammate Patricija Kondraskaite’s 48.95 for 2nd.

Kayman Neal won the 200 back in 1:54.38 for her first time swimming the event this season and her 2nd fastest time ever. She was only about half-a-second off her lifetime best of 1:53.85 from the Big 12 Championships.

The 100 breast and 100 fly also went to Arizona swimmers with Eleni Gewalt taking the 100 breast in 59.91, the only time under 1:00, and Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhanghah won the 100 fly in 53.74.

SMU came out on top of TCU in their dual meet, and they had a few overall event winners as well. Summer Osborne won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.31, coming in just over a tenth ahead of Arizona’s Kayman Neal, who swam 1:46.49. This was a new personal best time for Osborne, dropping from the 1:46.86 from the SMU Classic last October.

Jimena Leal won the 100 back in 53.48, a little more than a tenth of the lifetime best 53.35 she set leading off the medley relay to start the meet.

AnneMarie Vlaic won the 200 fly for the Mustangs in 1:57.59, coming in three seconds ahead of teammate Cassidy Allison as the only athlete under 2:00 in the event. This swim was just four tenths off her lifetime best in the event of 1:57.12 from January of 2024.

The 200 IM also went SMU’s way with Izzy Krantzcke taking the win in 2:01.49, touching two tenths ahead of Arizona’s Paige Armstrong (2:01.67). This was a new season best for Krantzcke, improving from the 2:02.47 she swam last weekend.

The rest of the swimming events went to the Texas Christian women’s team. Avery Dillon was the only dual event winner of the meet, taking the women’s 500 free in 4:50.09 and the 1650 free in 16:35.14. Both swims were new season best times for her, and were just off her lifetime bests of 4:46.97 and 16:32.08.

Nina Vadovicova won the women’s 200 breast in 2:12.50, touching about a second ahead of SMU’s Krantzcke to just miss her season best mark of 2:12.07 from the beginning of October.

Finally, Taylor Steelman won the 400 IM in 4:22.80, winning by nearly two seconds and just missing her personal best of 4:22.79 from early October.

Arizona and TCU split the women’s diving events with Wildcat Allie Sando scoring 266.05 to win the 1-Meter and Horned Frog Emma Herrera scoring 263.80 on the 3-Meter for the win.

Men’s Recap

The Arizona men also won all four relays. The 400 medley relay was won by Alex Desangles (46.82), Tavner Wisdom (53.42), Haakon Naughton (45.37), and Tomas Lukminas (42.02) in 3:07.63, three seconds ahead of the SMU ‘A’ team.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Taylor Luck (20.14), Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri (19.48), Tomas Lukminas (19.65), Jakey Hutchinson (19.23) in 1:18.50, about a second ahead of SMU.

Duncan Henderson (21.38), Tavner Wisdom (24.40), Haakon Naughton (20.59), and Jakey Hutchinson (19.29) swam 1:25.66 in the 200 medley relay to win by a second over TCU’s ‘A’.

Colin Clough of TCU and Kristaps Mikelsons from SMU had the fastest breaststroke splits in the field, tied at 24.33.

Finally, the 400 freestyle relay team of Hutchinson (44.71), Lukminas (42.22), Taylor Luck (42.62), and Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri (41.90) won with their time of 2:51.45 coming in two seconds ahead of SMU’s ‘A’.

The individual events were led by a few major winners from Arizona. Tomas Lukminas won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, swimming 19.57 in the 50 and 42.30 in the 100 free. His 100 free was a new season best time, dropping from the 42.49 he swam at the All Arizona Invite.

Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri finished 2nd in the 50 and 100 free, but picked up the event win in the 200 free at 1:33.60, which is the 15th fastest time in the country this season. Lukminas finished 2nd in 1:34.53.

Alex Desangles won both backstroke events for the Wildcats, touching in 46.63 in the 100, which was about a second off the 45.89 he swam at the All Arizona Invite, and 1:42.29 in the 200, which was his first time swimming the event SCY.

The final two event winner for the Wildcats was Haakon Naughton, who won the 100 fly in 46.51 and the 200 IM in 1:45.96, which was five seconds faster than he swam last October.

Joel Nace was the other individual event winner for Arizona, taking the top spot in the 200 fly at 1:44.46, about two seconds off his lifetime best of 1:42.76.

Just like on the women’s side the SMU men finished 2nd over the TCU men’s team by a little more than 100 points.

Jack Henry Forrest won the 500 for SMU in 4:22.95, a new season best time and about seven seconds off 4:15.46 he set as his best time in February of last year.

Both breaststroke events went to the Mustangs. Kristaps Mikelsons won the 100 breast in 54.05, just off his season best of 54.03 from SMU’s meet with A&M. Joe Umhofer won the 200 breast in 1:58.54, touching just a tenth ahead of Mikelsons in 2nd. This was a new personal best for Umhofer, dropping from the 1:59.06 he swam last season at the SMU Last Chance Invite.

Andy Baklanov was SMU’s final event winner with his title in the 400 IM touching in 3:52.80, a slight add from his lifetime best of 3:51.45 from the SMU Classic earlier this month.

TCU had one event winner. Aaron Wilmes took the men’s 1650 freestyle in 15:20.69, about seven seconds off his lifetime best of 15:13.49 from December 2022. This is the 7th fastest time in the country this season.

The diving events were shared by SMU and Arizona with Luke Sitz winning the 1-Meter event for SMU with his score of 361.00 and Luke Hernandez won the 3-Meter for Arizona in 359.40.
