Windsor leaves no doubt as it dominates fellow 3A contender Mead ...Saudi Arabia

WINDSOR — Windsor’s tough, swarming defense didn’t give an inch.

Mead’s veteran coach Jason Klatt didn’t mince a word.

And when the two top-ranked teams in Class 3A football got together Friday night at H.J. Dudley Field, the Wizards didn’t leave a doubt.

Windsor dominated from beginning to end, clinching a North 2 League title with a dominant, wire-to-wire 23-0 win against the Mavericks.

“They kicked our butt,” Klatt said. “When you have more physical players that play sound on defense, have great fundamentals on defense, they run to the ball, they tackle, it’s hard to gain yards. And, that’s what we found out tonight.”

The Wizards remained undefeated, improving to 9-0 overall, 4-0 in North 2 play. They’re the top-ranked team in CHSAA’s Selection and Seeding Index.

And with Friday’s win, Windsor’s positioning among the top of 3A is unlikely to change when the index is used to determine postseason seeding after the regular season wraps up a week from now.

Mead, which came into the game ranked second in 3A behind the Wizards, fell to 7-2, 3-1 — suffering its first loss since dropping a barnburner against Holy Family 27-21 on Oct. 3.

The Mavericks were never in any real position to extend their win streak, nor was Windsor ever in any danger of disrupting its win streak.

Windsor took the opening possession 58 yards in 7 minutes, 14 seconds, as Lou Palermo capped the drive with a 32-yard field goal to put the Wizards up 3-0.

On their second drive, they went 46 yards in 4:36, as senior running back Adrian Czyszczon plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out for the first of his two first-half touchdowns to extend the Wizards’ lead to 9-0 with 10:04 left in the second quarter.

Czyszczon scored again shortly before halftime, bolting past the goal line on a 23-yard touchdown run to extend Windsor’s lead to 16-0 with 1:22 left in the first half.

The Wizards were like an anaconda, methodically squeezing the life out of the Mavericks.

“We had a ‘nightmare mentality’ where we just want every opponent to be punished,” said Czyszczon, who had a game-high 120 rushing yards on 23 carries. “They’re a good team. But, we’re better. And, we obviously, go into every game like it might be our last, which is what we did today. Both sides of the ball executed really well.”

Windsor won the yardage battle 381-100, doing so with elongated scoring drives and supremely balanced offense.

Three Wizards ball-carriers had well over 100 yards apiece.

In addition to Czyszczon, fellow senior running back Grady Sullivan had 119 yards on 12 carries, while senior quarterback Mason Moore had 118 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Windsor’s four scoring drives lasted 7:14, 4:36, 2:46 and 6:44.

The Wizards even had a scoreless second-half drive that took 7:58 off the clock, with Windsor ultimately turning over the ball on downs.

“When their offensive line is grinding on you, and they’re running the clock like that, it feels like (the deficit is) 42-0,” Klatt said. “That’s a very, very talented offensive line, a very well-coached group up front.”

Moore helped engineer that juggernaut of an offense from his quarterback position, but it was the Wizards’ dominant defense he showered praise on afterwards.

Windsor allows just a mere four points of game. This was the Wizards’ fourth shutout of the season.

And not only does Windsor’s punishing defense make opposing offenses much worse, it makes the Wizards’ own offense much better.

“We practice against that defense all year, and that just makes us so much better,” Moore said. “We have the best defense in 3A by far, recording a shutout against the No. 2 ranked team. If we practice against (our defense), we’re going to move the ball against other defenses.”
