A Halloween dual meet between South Carolina and Florida State saw the teams split wins with the South Carolina women and the FSU men walking home with wins. The Gamecock women will remain undefeated this season, while the Florida State men will move to 2-2 in dual meets.

Women’s Meet Recap

The Gamecock women earned a decisive victory over the Seminoles scoring 199 points to FSU’s 91.

Their first win of the meet came in the women’s 1000 freestyle where sophomore Nora Fluck swam 9:43.64, a new personal best time, dropping two tenths from the 9:43.81 she swam earlier this month against Georgia.

Fluck also finished 2nd in the 500 freestyle, touching in 4:48.14 to come in three seconds behind senior teammate Breckin Gormley who won in 4:45.10. Gormley’s swim was a new season best, dropping from the 4:48.02 she swam against Arkansas on October 11th.

This was Gormley’s 2nd event win of the meet, joining her top time in the 200 freestyle of 1:46.55, which was a new lifetime best time by more than two seconds, dropping from the 1:48.68 mark she swam in February of 2023. She generally swims the event once a season, but her time this morning was only two seconds over last season’s NCAA Invite time of 1:44.74.

Fellow senior Amy Riordan also won two events, taking first in the women’s 100 backstroke at 52.50, just off the season best 52.41 she swam against Arkansas earlier this month. She is less than a second off her lifetime best of 51.78 from March of this year.

Riordan swam the 100 free as well, touching in 49.19 to win by four tenths over teammate Dylan Scholes who touched in 49.59. This was also just off her season best of 49.06 from the South Carolina Dual meet against Georgia at the beginning of the month.

Scholes won the 50 free in 22.61 for the Gamecocks, four tenths off her best of 22.27, but it was a new season best by almost three tenths over the 22.89 mark she set at the beginning of October against Georgia.

South Carolina won all five 200s over the course of the meet. Megan Maholic took the 200 backstroke in 1:57.12, a new best time to drop from the 1:57.52 she swam nearly three years ago in November of 2022, and Jordan Agliano won the 200 fly at 1:55.75 to exactly tie her best mark from November of 2023. Agliano’s time is under last season’s NCAA Invite time in the event of 1:55.82.

Delany Franklin won the 200 breast and 200 IM events in the 2nd half of the meet. She touched in 2:10.92 in the 200 breast, coming just over half-a-second over her best of 2:10.46 from February of this year. She was also about a tenth off her season best of 2:10.81 from the meet with Georgia at the beginning of October.

In the 200 IM, she swam 2:00.33 to just miss her season best of 1:59.84 from South Carolina’s meet against Arkansas, and she was about two seconds off her lifetime best of 1:58.02 from SECs.

Finally, the Gamecocks won the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet. The team of Amy Riordan (49.36), Dylan Scholes (49.53), Ellery Ottern (50.34) and Sofia Luper (50.43) came together to swim 3:19.66, winning the event by a little more than half-a-second over FSU’s 3:20.35.

The Florida State team had a few strong swims as well, starting with their win in the 200 medley relay. Alice Velden swam backstroke, Julia Mansson was on breast, Maryn McDade swam fly, and Mary Leigh Hardman was on the freestyle leg to touch in 1:37.54. The splits are not available on Meet Mobile.

Mansson went on to win the individual 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:01.33, just out-touching South Carolina’s Caroline Kudela’s 1:01.59 for the win. She was four tenths off her lifetime best of 59.97 from last season’s ACC Championships and less than a tenth over the 1:01.27 she swam last week at the All Florida Invite.

Sophie Freeman was Florida State’s other individual event winner with her 53.59 in the women’s 100 fly to touch just two hundredths ahead of Jordan Agliano from South Carolina. Her swim was a little more than six tenths off her lifetime best of 52.97 from the ACC Championships. Her swim was a new season best time, dropping from the 53.67 she swam at Florida State’s meet with Army.

South Carolina and Florida State split the women’s diving events with FSU’s Kayleigh Clark winning the 1-Meter in 281.93 and South Carolina’s Sophie Verzyl winning the 3-Meter with 344.10.

Men’s Recap

The men’s meet was closer than the women’s, but the FSU men won the meet by taking the wins in both relay events. They started with an event win in the 200 medley relay with the team of Max Wilson, Tommaso Baravelli, Michel Arkhangelskiy, and Sam Bork swimming 1:24.81.

Michel Arkhangelskiy won three events over the course of the meet, starting with 50 free where he touched in 19.82 to beat teammate Sam Bork by four hundredths for the win. This swim was exactly a second off his best time of 18.82 from March of this year and four tenths off his season best 19.43 from a few weeks ago at the Georgia Tech Dual Meet Tournament.

In the 100 free, he swam 42.97 to win by more than a second-and-a-half over Bork’s 44.55. This was off his season best of 42.44 from the Dual Meet Tournament and his lifetime best of 41.68 from ACCs.

Finally, he took the 100 fly in 46.34, just two hundredths ahead of South Carolina’s Eldor Usmonov’s 46.36. This was again just off his season best 45.82 from the DMT and off his lifetime best of 44.36 from ACCs.

Sophomore Mathias Christensen won the 200 fly and 200 IM events in 1:44.56 and 1:46.94 respectively. His 200 fly time was a new season best time, dropping from the 1:44.78 he swam at the Florida State Fall Classic at the end of September.

Sophomore Logan Robinson won the men’s 200 freestyle with a time of 1:35.78, a time about six tenths off his best time in the event of 1:35.29 from last November.

The 100 back went to senior Max Wilson in 47.41, which was a second add from the 46.47 he swam at the DMT. His lifetime best in the event stands at 44.82 from the ACC Championships.
