It is the sordid nature of the allegations against Andrew Mountbatten Windsor that has made this crisis so deep and so damaging. Around the world, the saga of the disgraced now ex-prince has sparked debate about royal morals, transparency and accountability. And questions have been posed about why the Palace did not act sooner.
ABC Australia pointedly asked whether anyone else was wondering why the Royal Family hadn’t just “catapulted Andrew to a desert island or far off galaxy”. The press in India reported the words of the heckler at Lichfield Cathedral last Monday who shouted at the King: “How long have you known about Andrew andEpstein?” And, in America, CNN is all over the King’s “extraordinary step” — as well as analysing the implications for other prominent men alluded to in Virginia Giuffre’s memoir.
Andrew has left a trail of destruction for much of his life as a royal. He travelled widely as a trade envoy for the UK and, as we are now learning, was often found sadly wanting in diplomatic skills. There have been reports from numerous countries about his behaviour, which has been variously described as cockiness to verging on the rude. He was certainly never less than demanding about how he was addressed and treated — not to mention whether there was a golf course nearby.
For many people, Andrew was the only member of the Royal Family they would ever meet – and the impression he made had repercussions for the reputation of the monarchy itself.
If there is a point in having a Royal Family, then it must be to command respect for the work that they do, promoting the UK abroad and supporting charities and important causes at home. Andrew, despite his continued protestations of innocence, has sullied his family’s name – now the only name he has.
It could not be allowed to continue, particularly just as Prince William sets off for an important visit to Brazil. The King’s action, although some complain it was not swift enough, has been widely applauded. He has stamped his authority on what had become a living nightmare for the Royal Family. In doing so he has also stamped most firmly on his brother, which cannot have been easy.
Now it will be up to the King and the rest of the working royals to repair the damage done. Globally, the hideous problem of sex trafficking and child abuse is finally gaining more attention. Queen Camilla and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, have both worked tirelessly for many years to bring international attention to the horror of it all.
Quite rightly the short, terse statement issued in the King’s name by Buckingham Palace prominently included the victims and survivors of all forms of abuse. This was about more than damage limitation; it was a heartfelt wish from both the King and Queen for the public to know that their “thoughts and utmost sympathies” always have been and remain with those who are subjected to abuse.
One further question that might demand the King’s attention is Andrew’s place in the line of succession. To me it seems untenable Mountbatten Windsor can even theoretically remain eighth in line to be King of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms. It would undoubtedly require an Act of Parliament to remove him, but that might just be necessary.
