A Scary Bad Performance, Burakovsky Treats with a Trick Shot, and Other Blackhawks Halloween Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Yeah, last night’s game sucked. After skating 10 games to start the regular season and the only blowouts being in the Blackhawks’ favor, there was finally a big, ugly loss to put on the board. Those are going to happen to every team every year. The Blackhawks have had more than their fair share of those the past few years.

After sleeping on it, my thoughts on the Blackhawks’ loss shifted.

Last night’s game felt a different. Rather than the “here we go again” exhausted, defeated feeling we’ve had when the wheels started to come off over the last few years, last night’s crap-the-bed performance was actually… disappointing.

I expected more. I expected better.

The fact that the Hawks looking that bad was disappointing tells me there has been a real shift in the perception of — and expectations for — this Blackhawks team. Which is great. But, to keep that feeling, they need to be better in Edmonton on Saturday night. And they might have to do that down a couple important bodies.

— HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) October 31, 2025 Why did the Blackhawks get their asses kicked last night? They made mistakes. A bunch of them. And “big” ones, as head coach Jeff Blashill described them after the game. One of those was the ugly, terribly-timed pinch by Louis Crevier late in the first period that opened the door for Winnipeg to score a go-ahead second goal in a period that the Blackhawks were otherwise dominating. Blashill spoke about that specific moment after the game, and then made a more general comment about the complete team performance:

“Some of your big mistakes — that honestly we’ve made a little bit at home — come to bite you more on the road.”

When you’re playing against a legit Stanley Cup contender in their barn, you have to play a good game to win — if you’re a good, established, experienced team. A team like the Blackhawks has to play a great game to win in Winnipeg. And the Blackhawks had a bad night at the office. Jason Dickinson was ruled out for the third period last night. Ilya Mikheyev took the morning skate but did not play. On a road trip that has five more games in the next ten days, having both of them not available — especially in Edmonton on Saturday night — might be a Halloween nightmare for the Blackhawks’ coaches.

Jason Dickinson is dealing with the same nagging injury that already cost him a few games. Blashill said he's questionable for Saturday in Edmonton.

How many times will you see this shot description on NHL.com? If you think the Blackhawks have been playing a lot of close games this year, we aren’t alone. There have been more close games early in the season than any in NHL history.

— BucciOT.Com (@Buccigross) October 31, 2025 Good read from Ben Pope on Connor Bedard being more comfortable and personable in front of the cameras and mics this year.

Have you noticed Connor Bedard's blunt quotes recently? He's actually always been blunt. This summer, he just decided to take the filter off."I think it’s good for the fans if we can show a little bit of who we are."Story: t.co/KIYWHqPpLY

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 29, 2025 Martin Nečas signed an eight-year extension with the Avalanche on Thursday that has an $11.5M cap hit. He becomes the 21st skater in the NHL to have a cap hit of at least $10M for the 2026-27 NHL season. Of those 21 contracts, seven (one-third) will be in the first year of the respective deal. Money is going up all over the league, folks. And the number of future top-tier free agents continues to shrink. Tough news for one of his former teammates in Carolina who’s off to a magnificent start this season. Seth Jarvis is a big piece for the Canes, and they were already banged up before the game last night. Here’s hoping he’s not out for very long because he’s a fun player to watch.

— Walt Ruff (@WaltRuff) October 31, 2025 Mat Barzal was a healthy scratch for the Islanders last night because he was late getting to the rink. USA Hockey announced the details of the World Juniors Pre-Tournament Series, which will feature Team USA, Finland and Germany in Duluth. Bemidji will host Czechia, Latvia and Slovakia. Mankato will host two games: Switzerland vs. Minnesota State and Denmark vs. Canada. And Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden will play in Rochester. Games will be played between Dec. 16-23 before the World Junior Championship begins Dec. 26 in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Well played, Ottawa. Well played indeed.
