(Guest opinion) Pam Shaddock: Trump’s actions show little respect for law ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

On Dec. 6, 2024, Donald Trump promised he wouldn’t be a dictator “except on Day One” of his administration. Approximately 10 months after the issuance of this promise and after 209 executive urders, approximately 2,000 Weld residents symbolically accused Trump of being a dictator at the “No Kings” protest in Lincoln Park.

In consulting your favorite Chatbot or Wikipedia for guidelines for a “dictator,” you’ll find numerous criteria. They include:

Absolute power: Republicans, the majority party in both houses of Congress are in lockstep with Trump, even on issues like tariffs, normally a Congressional issue. Trump pretends that executive orders are laws. Even though these are directives to only the executive branch, he expects obedience by all. His ever-changing tariff policies have hurt our Weld County export economy, particularly our farmers and ranchers.

Trump refuses to try to settle the government shutdown, instead he attempts to fire even more government employees. He dumbfounds us by demolishing the East Wing of the White House, which he promised wouldn’t be touched. He mystifies us by pardoning more than 1,500 rioters involved in the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, especially when the cost was, not only in lives lost, but an estimated $2.7 billion in restitution, court costs, and damages. He even expects his own Justice Department to pay him $230 million to settle accusations he made against the Biden Administration.

Elimination of Opposition: Recently, Trump’s Federal Communications chair took offense at Jimmy Kimmel’s statements after the death of media personality Charlie Kirk. The chair threatened to take punitive action against Kimmel and ABC. This resulted in Kimmel’s suspension. Trump also issued claims against media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, Paramount/CBS, and ABC News. He received millions in settlement from each. Presumably, the media is motivated by fear of Trump’s vengeance. He’s stated he “hates his enemies.”

Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary demanded that TSA broadcast messages in airports condemning the Democratic Party for causing the current governmental shutdown. The Hatch Act prohibits most federal employees from engaging in such partisan messaging. Trump enlisted his federal prosecutors to criminally charge former FBI Director James Comey, Attorney General of New York State Leticia James, and Trump’s former adviser-turned-critic John Bolton in retribution for actions and statements which he dislikes.

Abuse of Power: Immigrants, including those with green cards, valid visas and citizens, have been swept up in raids because of the color of their skin, without due process, and detained in inhumane conditions. Alleged drug traffickers are now being blown to bits by our Navy in the Caribbean and Pacific. Federal law requires that the Congress be apprised of military actions ordered by the president, and it must consent to these actions. Constitutionally, only Congress can declare any war.

Trump disregards the public welfare regarding health coverage, cost of living, safety and ending the current government shutdown. Food stamp availability for Weld County will terminate on Nov. 1 and health insurance premiums will double for many on Jan. 1. The Weld County Food Bank is making a special plea to donors to “Bridge the Gap.”

Trump claims various cities are war-ravaged, in rebellion and in a state of emergency. So far, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Trump. By creating crises, a leader morphs into a dictator. Friend of Trump and convicted-felon Steve Bannon says there’s a plan in 2028 to elect Trump to a third term despite the constitutional restrictions.

Let’s not mince words, Trump’s actions show little respect for our federal laws and Constitution. He’s a dictator. If you disagree, as influencer Charlie Kirk would say, “prove me wrong.”
