Jack Punswick, cancer survivor and Kansas 6A 2024 State Champion in the 100 breaststroke, has given his verbal commitment to the University of Southern Indiana’s class of 2030. Punswick, who was cleared of Hodgkins Lymphoma in April following a year-and-a-half-long battle with the disease which he was diagnosed with in 2024 following the summer Futures Championships in Minneapolis, is currently taking a gap year to regain the form he showed in 2024. At the 2025 Kansas 6A State Championships, Punswick placed second in the 100 breaststroke despite not yet being cleared of cancer and was named the recipient of the 2025 National High School Spirit of Sport Award, which recognizes individuals who exemplify ideals of the spirit of sport.

Punswick completed chemotherapy in December 2024 and quickly returned to competition, and for a time held the top time in Kansas in the boy’s 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:00.24 representing Overland Park-Blue Valley Southwest High School, qualifying him for the 2025 KSHSAA 6A State Championship. Weeks later, Punswick posted a 1:00.32 the prelims of the 100 breaststroke at the 2025 EKL Championships which he followed up with a third-place finish in finals with a 1:01.44. At the KSHSAA 6A State Championships, Punswick swam a 59.63 to take second in the 100 breaststroke behind club teammate Lincoln Mainelli, helping Overland Park-Blue Valley Southwest to a third-consecutive state title in the KSHSAA 6A division.
Southern Indiana’s men’s team finished 6th in the 2025 Summit League Championships. Punswick’s best time in the 200 breaststroke would have earned him 18th in the prelims at the 2025 Summit League Championships, and his 100 breaststroke lifetime best also puts him slightly outside of the B final at the 2025 Summit League Championships.
Punswick is set to have an immediate impact on Southern Indiana’s men’s team. The University of Southern Indiana’s inaugural season was launched in the fall of 2022, making it one of the youngest in the NCAA and providing Punswick with the opportunity to help foster the culture of the program for years to come. Punswick’s best times already put him in the top-10 of the program’s top performers in both breaststroke events, notching him at 2nd in the 200 breast and 4th in the 100 breast. It is also worth noting that Punswick didn’t start swimming year-round until his sophomore year of high school (2022-2023) after getting cut from his high school basketball team. One year later, and after also joining COOL Swim Team (City of Olathe Lightening) with coach Rob Kenley, Punswick entered the 2023-2024 high school swim season and and went on to win the state title in the 100 breaststroke in February 2024, approximately 5 months prior to his cancer diagnosis.
