I hadn’t thought about DJ Moore as a realistic trade candidate until I started browsing the NFL rumor mill.
The 2025 NFL Trade Deadline is in 5 days. As owners of a 4-3 record and an upcoming schedule featuring six of their final 10 games against teams currently holding a playoff spot, the Chicago Bears could go in any number of different directions. Sure, the Bears *COULD* swing some trades to bolster some positions of need. Or the team could trade off some pieces to gear up for next offseason.
Might one of those pieces be wide receiver DJ Moore?
In his latest at ESPN, Bill Barnwell explores which teams should add (or subtract) players at the upcoming NFL Trade Deadline. Barnwell lists the Bears among the teams that should take a neutral approach, lumping them with squads like the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Pittsburgh Steelers that “don’t really have a clear path forward.” In the piece, Barnwell name-checks receiver DJ Moore as someone who falls under the “notable trade candidates” category. That mention certainly piqued my interest.

This is what Barnwell had to say about DJ Moore as someone who the Bears could send packing at the NFL Trade Deadline:
If there’s a prominent player who could unexpectedly make sense as a potential trade candidate at the deadline for me, it’s Moore. The 28-year-old is starting a four-year, $110 million extension next year, but he hasn’t found a consistent role in Ben Johnson’s offense; he is averaging a career-low 47.3 receiving yards per game. I get the sense that Johnson’s preferred option would be to work with 12 personnel when tight ends Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland are healthy or work Luther Burden III into the mix alongside Olamide Zaccheaus and Rome Odunze in three-WR sets. A trade during the offseason would make more sense, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Moore became the odd man out in Chicago.
I hadn’t considered DJ Moore as a possible in-season trade candidate. The 28-year-old wideout has 26 catches, 331 receiving yards, and one touchdown in seven games. That puts him on a pace for a 63-catch, 804-yard, 2-touchdown season. Suddenly, I can start to see why Barnwell makes the connection to view Moore as a trade piece.

Rookie Luther Burden III has flashed his potential and looks like he could be a quality fit as the Robin to Odunze’s Batman in Chicago’s receivers room. Olamide Zaccheaus has begun carving out a niche as a go-to target for dirty yards, just as he was for Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels last year. And while we haven’t seen as much of the 12 personnel package starring tight ends Cole Kmet and rookie Colston Loveland, that still figures to be a staple for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson moving forward. This information makes pegging DJ Moore as the odd man out easy.

That said, trading DJ Moore isn’t as easy as you might expect. If you recall, Moore signed a contract extension in 2024 and has some big-money days ahead. There aren’t too many teams that can fit his salary under the cap right now, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a team that can’t make some cap magic happen. Even then, Chicago’s front office would need to find a team that could accommodate a player whose cap number is $28.5 million for each of the next three seasons. This isn’t to say that it can’t happen. But I think Barnwell might be onto something when he mentions Moore as a possible offseason trade candidate.
For what it’s worth, ESPN reporter Courtney Cronin does not think a DJ Moore trade is likely to happen. But she does mention that the Bears “could feel OK” parting ways with the four-time 1,000-yard receiver if the team can create cap space by doing so. Stay tuned.
