Facing Jonathan Toews, Youth Movement(s), Prospect Goals, Cooley Got Paid, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

The (first) day has arrived. When the 2025-26 regular season schedule was released, everyone I know went looking for the same specific games: Blackhawks vs. Jets. Yes, they’re Central Division foes; I’m not sure I would qualify it as a rivalry. But this year there’s a different element. Jonathan Toews is playing for his hometown Jets.

After two years away from the bright lights of the NHL, the longest tenured captain in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks decided to lace the skates back up and give a comeback his best effort. There were doubters (haters even) who said he was washed before he stepped away, so there wasn’t anything left to give the game. But Toews wanted to go out on his terms. And, if you know anything about him, doubting Toews is wasted time and energy.

Coming into Thursday’s games, Toews leads all NHL skaters in faceoff win percentage at 64.1 (min. 125 faceoffs) — more than four full percent better than anyone else in the league. He has two goals and three assists in the Jets’ first ten games of the season. And, most importantly, Toews looks healthy and happy.

It’s going to be emotionally awkward watching him wear the “wrong” jersey on a Blackhawks broadcast tonight for sure. Mark Lazerus at The Athletic write a nice piece on Toews’ comeback and facing the Blackhawks earlier this week that’s worth your time.

Jonathan Toews twice slipped into "we" when talking about the Blackhawks in our conversation. He still watches most of their games. But on Thursday, he'll line up against Chicago for the first time."I'll be ready, that's for sure." t.co/u8ZizIrkFd

— Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) October 28, 2025 The Blackhawks dropped the first episode of their “Every Shift” series on Wednesday afternoon. It starts all the way back with the hiring of Jeff Blashill as the head coach over the summer and runs up to the start of the regular season. Some good looks behind the curtain at the team working — and having fun on and off the ice — together. I wanted to include that video piece because Connor Bedard said something after the win on Tuesday night that certainly felt like a young leader taking a stand on behalf of his roster. He’s said a few things like this already this season, but it felt stronger after a win against a team with playoff expectations and after ten games of the regular season. Outside noise doesn’t mean a thing inside the room.

Connor Bedard: “We really have such a belief in here in our group. Coming into the year, if you asked people that weren’t part of our team, their expectations might have been low. But we never thought like that.”

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 29, 2025 Which brings me to this piece from Pierre LeBrun at The Athletic on Wednesday. LeBrun wrote about younger teams making moves up the standings early in the year, some of whom are playing better than expected. He includes the Chicago Blackhawks in the group of teams that’s climbing standings with young cores, while some older, more established teams/rosters are struggling out of the gates.

NHL changing of guard? This could be a season like we haven’t seen in a long time as far as up-and-coming teams putting pressure on the long standing contenders: ‘Everybody is better’ My latest for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ ⤵️ t.co/V13lARoVSX

— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) October 29, 2025 I found this graphic interesting. Travis Yost visualized the most effective forward duos in the NHL. Only two pairs of Blackhawks have been together for at least 100 minutes (entering Wednesday): Bedard with André Burakovsky and Frank Nazar with Teuvo Teräväinen.

— Travis Yost (@travisyost) October 29, 2025 In the OHL last night, Blackhawks prospect Marek Vanacker scored his 12th goal of the season as Brantford rallied from being down 3-0 to have a game tied at 4-4. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs lost 5-4. Vanacker’s 12 goals (in 12 games) are tied for second in the OHL behind Jordan Charron’s 13 goals in 16 games.

— Brantford Bulldogs (@BulldogsOHL) October 30, 2025 In the WHL, Kamloops lost 6-3 to Everett. Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm had the primary assist on the Blazer’s first two goals and then scored the third for a three-point night. He now has 8 goals and 13 assists in 14 games, making Behm one of ten players in the WHL with at least 20 points already this season (Behm is tied for seventh).

— Kamloops Blazers (@blazerhockey) October 30, 2025 This week’s “Holy Jumpin'” news came out of Utah, where the Mammoth announced the third-highest contract coming out of entry level in NHL history on Wednesday morning. Logan Cooley signed an eight-year extension with a $10M AAV — a deal we probably never would have seen in Arizona. Good for all involved parties. Bad for the Central Division, because Cooley’s a stud.

The Bulls beat the Kings last night. Zach LaVine got the tribute video treatment at the UC. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams talked about areas that need improvement on Wednesday. The Blue Jays are one win away from a World Series championship. With the Bulls remaining undefeated, it was nice to chat about the book I wrote celebrating the history of Chicago’s NBA franchise with the ladies on Daytime Chicago on WGN TV yesterday (buy it here).
