How about Connor Bedard, eh? I’m not a hockey guy, but he is the kind of rising talent that could get me glancing over at the Blackhawks more and more.
… which makes me think about the Cubs, and about the nature of making non-fans into casual fans, and casual fans into hardcore fans. I think it’s probable that having really interesting, exciting players or storylines is what can bring folks into the fold if they otherwise paid very little attention to the team or the sport. But it’s winning, consistently over a longer period of time, that converts folks into hardcore fans. Yes, obviously there are exceptions with unique stories and situations, but generally speaking, it’s a lot easier to pick up the casuals periodically from year-to-year than it is to grow your base of truly obsessed and devoted fans, especially in the current era of exceptionally fragmented entertainment attention. All that is to say, I think there is a lot of value in having guys like Pete Crow-Armstrong around – guys who can really turn heads on a one-off basis a couple times a week, getting casuals to check in and check it out. He’s just one example, but he’s an example with whom the Cubs have already had extension talks once, and might consider engaging again this offseason. Of course, it matters most if those fun, engaging players are also really good at helping their team win. Not only does that create more attention-grabbing moments, like Bedard last night, but it also helps create that winning experience over multiple years. Which, again, is how you really lock down long-term, highly-committed fans. And that, in turn, is how you improve the experience of BEING a fan for those of us who were already long ago hooked for life. We want fun players. We want annual winning. And we want a big tent of other fans to be around when the fun and winning are happening. Speaking of all of that, you’ve got a World Series full of fun players and successful teams, and I reckon it is creating two fan bases that are growing and cementing. With 2025 #WorldSeries presented by Capital One returning to Canada for first time in 32 years and rosters of international stars, Games 1 & 2 drew large global audiences. pic.twitter.com/zd2tnIL7iq

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) October 29, 2025 Guerrero is hitting an absurd .419/.500/.806/248 wRC+ over 15 postseason games this year. (Randy Arozarena’s number there, if you were curious, came in five more games.) The Padres have interviewed Albert Pujols as one of their finalists for the managerial job, though it’s not clear how many other finalists there are, or whether Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty is among them.
