A 38-year-old man from Woodstock died after he was electrocuted during a farm incident in McHenry County, authorities said.
Around 5:17 p.m. Monday, Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a report of farm equipment that struck a power line in a ditch along County Line Road south of Jackson Road in McHenry County. McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene shortly after.
Authorities said preliminary investigation suggests that a 56-year-old man from Hebron was operating a tractor pulling a grain cart. The farm equipment was positioned in the ditch adjacent to the roadway to attempt to offload grain into a semi-truck parked down the road.
“During the process, the grain cart’s Avalanche grain chute made contact with the overhead power lines, causing them to come down,” McHenry County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The energized power lines came into contact with the tractor and a man who was operating the semi-truck was electrocuted when he attempted to board the tractor.
The man, a 38-year-old from Woodstock, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The tractor operator was transported to a local hospital where he was initially listed in fair condition, authorities said.
ComEd was called to the scene to address the downed power lines and investigate the incident.
An investigation by the sheriff’s office and the McHenry County coroner remains ongoing.
