CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Jury selection is now underway in the trial of the men accused of killing Scott Brooks, the co-owner of Brooks Sandwich House, almost six years ago.
The judge said Tuesday he expects jury selection could take at least several days, but court officials have also said it could last even a week or more.
A major reason for that is publicity.
The case is so high-profile that nine of twelve potential jurors said Tuesday afternoon they’ve heard about this case in the past through media reports, or in other ways, prior to the trial starting.
On Tuesday morning, the judge made another major decision in the trial.
On January 11, 2020, two people, Siojvon Joseph and Asa Shannon, were found shot to death in a car on Atando Avenue.
Police said robbery was the motive.
The murders happened 32 days after and 2.8 miles away from where Scott Brooks was shot and killed during a robbery when he was opening Brooks Sandwich House in December 2019.
Steven Staples and Terry Connor, Jr., are suspects in both cases, but they’re on trial for one, Brooks’ murder.
On Tuesday, Judge Louis Trosch ruled that evidence from the murders on Atando Avenue can be brought into the Brooks trial.
“I feel wonderful about it. It should have been (evidence allowed) because it’s admissible just like the evidence in this case is. And I’m not sure if they have anything else, but the MO was the same way, the pattern was the same way, so hopefully this is going to help our case and bringing justice to my brother,” said David Brooks, Scott Brooks’ twin brother and co-owner of Brooks Sandwich House.
David Brooks still owns and runs the NoDa burger shop.
He was back at work on Tuesday after sitting in on the first day of the trial, Monday.
“I’m trying to leave the room, which is limited space now, for the jurors and the rest of my family to be there,” said David Brooks. “Being tried at the same time is going to be a little lengthy, but as long as the evidence is there, hopefully they can get a quick conviction, as soon as they possibly can.”
On Tuesday afternoon, two potential jurors were dismissed for medical reasons, and another for financial reasons because of missing work. A third was dismissed because she had family members who were victims of violent crime in different cases, and she did not feel she could be impartial to the defendants.
