Forty cats were rescued from a downtown studio apartment by the San Diego Humane Society, the organization said Monday.
According to a statement, a concerned person within the community reported that multiple cats and a strong odor was coming from a unit in the 1400 block of Imperial Avenue in early August.
Imperial AvenueIt was later determined that the owner, an elderly woman, who was hospitalized, could no longer care for the pets.
Officials said law enforcement worked with building management and the tenant’s family to enter the unit and rescue the pets safely.
“Due to the conditions and stress of the animals hiding, the cats were methodically rescued over the course of several weeks,” the Humane Society said in a statement.
On September 17, they rescued 15 cats; on September 24, they rescued 11, and on October 1, they rescued the remaining 14 cats, the statement said.
“Upon intake, each animal received vaccines and medical exams,” the organization added.
Several are currently being treated for upper respiratory infections. However, at least 16 cats have already been adopted and eight are available for adoption.
The name and age of the owner was not immediately available, and her condition was unclear.
