Ravens 30, Bears 16: The Winning Streak Ends With a THUD ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

No Lamar Jackson, no problem for the Baltimore Ravens.

But when it came to the Chicago Bears, there were lots of problems. All over the field. Offense. Defense. Coaching. Special teams. And the end result was a 30-16 win for the Ravens to snap the Bears’ four-game winning streak.

Thoughts on a disappointing Week 8 loss

Mandatory Credit: Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images All good things must come to an end, including the Bears’ winning streak — which ends with a deafening thud. This was a reality check. A necessary one, too. If this one hurts, then that is a good thing. It means you care. But that doesn’t make me feel any better in the immediate aftermath. It was sobering to watch the offense fail to sustain drives. And with the defense failing to force takeaways and create short fields, that unit was lagging all day. Even the special teams had some lackluster moments that contributed to this defeat. That game was like trying to watch your favorite movie on a streaming service despite constant buffering. 0/10. Would not recommend. This one is going to fester throughout the week. I’ll get over it by Sunday. But in the meantime, I can’t stop thinking about how much of a missed opportunity it is to get a struggling Ravens team with two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson on the sideline and not make the most of it on game day. And it starrted from the beginning when Chicago’s offense failed to score a touchdown on either of the two first possessions. That felt like a win for Baltimore, which took control of the game (with ease!) after that despite being outplayed in the first quarter. I guess it’s true that it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.

CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 8 INSTANT GRADES

On the one hand, I can’t believe the stat line Tyler Huntley posted on Sunday. The Ravens quarterback completed 17 of 22 passes, threw for 186 yards, tossed a touchdown, didn’t throw a pick, and finished the day with a 116.9 passer rating. But on the other hand, I can believe the stat line Tyler Huntley posted on Sunday because Chicago was starting its CB5 and CB6 on the depth chart and lost two defensive linemen early in the game. It felt like a recipe for disaster, then disaster happened. I feel pretty gross having watched it unfold. And I definitely don’t feel good thinking about how backup Tyler Huntley outplayed 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams. The optics there are ROUGH. There is a discussion to be had about Chicago’s kicking situation, but I don’t want to try to boil it down into one bulletpoint in a postgame vent session. Just know that it is coming.

Three Bears

Caleb Williams — Here is the line for QB1 now that the dust has settled on this game:

25/38 (65.8%) 285 yards (7.5 yards/attempt) 0 touchdowns, 1 interception 77.2 passer rating

Caleb Williams well in the first quarter, but sputtered out down the stretch. After completing 8 of 11 passes for 93 yards and a 97.9 passer rating in the first quarter, Williams followed by going 17 of 27 (62.9%) for 192 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, and a 68.8 rating in the final three periods.

I don’t want to spend a ton of time here because I’m sure Patrick will cover it when he breaks down Caleb’s tape, but there was so much bad stuff happening for QB1 on Sunday. The footwork looked sloppy for a second consecutive week. And the locking in on a fave receiver came back to cost him with that interception. This is one where I wish it was socially acceptable to throw my television off of my third floor balcony.

Colston Loveland — Loveland caught an 18-yard reception on the first play from scrimmage, but finished the day with three catches and 38 receiving yards. He was targeted five times, but it was yet another game in which a top-10 pick wasn’t an impact player. I’m not ready to go down the re-draft rabbit hole just yet. But given the performances of other tight ends taken elsewhere on NFL Draft weekend, the Colston Loveland experience is looking like more of a project than I previously anticipated. I trust this coaching staff to figure it out, but the early returns are unsavory.

Ben Johnson — There are 53 guys on a roster to choose from for the Three Bears segment, but Patrick and Matt both picked the same player. Hence, I am taking the opportunity to add a third member for this section — Head Coach Ben Johnson. This was not Ben’s best game as an offensive play-caller, especially after the first two drives. The offense lacked rhythm, consistency, and big plays. I imagine some of that had to do with the return of Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith, but it felt like there were some missed opportunities. It’ll be back to the drawing board for the leader of Chicago’s football team.

WHAT’S NEXT: vs. Cincinnati Bengals at noon CT on Nov. 2 in Cincinnati (CBS-TV)

All good things come to an end. And it’s not as if this team was going to win out and go 15-2. So this sobering game can turn into a good thing for this team. With that being said, the Bears stay the road to face a Bengals team that is rejuvenated with Joe Flacco under center. And if this group has to go into battle with a starting secondary of Josh Blackwell and Nick McCloud at cornerback against Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, that is going to make for a stressful Sunday. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
