LOOK: The Bears’ Investiments in the Offensive Line Are Paying Off ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Breaking down the Chicago Bears offensive line has caused much heartburn and headaches in recent years. So when General Manager Ryan Poles went all-in on overhauling the unit this past offseason, it gave me hope for a better future. We are just six games into the 2025 NFL season, so there are obvious small sample caveats to point out here, but it looks like the investments in the Bears offensive line are paying off for Chicago’s football team.

Better late than never, I suppose.

The new-look Bears offensive line is grading out well in the early going

Between the trades, new deals for guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, and the signing of center Drew Dalman in free agency, the Bears offensive line saw $91.25 million worth of guaranteed money invested into the trenches. And the early returns have been great:

Pro Football Focus ranks the Bears offensive line as the 13th best in the NFL going into Week 8. That ranking is three spots higher than it was going into Week 7, so things are trending in the right direction for Chicago’s football team. Center Drew Dalman garnered significant praise from PFF, noting that he posted a perfect game in pass protection as he didn’t allow any pressures en route to picking up an 83.2 pass-blocking grade. Also worth noting is that left guard Joe Thuney’s 83.0 pass-blocking grade is the best among guards who qualified for the leaderboard. Over at Pro Football Network, the Bears offensive line currently owns a “B” grade, which ranks the unit as the fourth best this season. Only three teams (Chiefs, Cowboys, Broncos) have a higher OL Impact score than the 83.8 that Chicago’s O-line currently boasts. The group’s Week 7 efforts are to be celebrated:

Praise for the Bears offensive line has been hard to find in recent years. But it is unavoidable now based on how well that group has played. This unit got off to a slow start, but has slowly and steadily been gelling in recent weeks. Quarterback Caleb Williams has been sacked just 11 times, and at a 5.6 percent clip. This is unheard of for a Bears signal caller. And yet, I’m not convinced this group has played its best ball. It isn’t inconceivable that the best is yet to come for this unit. That excites me. And I imagine the rest of the offense feels similarly about the group’s future.

WEEK 8 PREVIEW — CHICAGO BEARS AT BALTIMORE RAVENS

For instance, left tackle Theo Benedet is battling the sharp learning curve that comes with joining the Bears offensive line as the new starting at left tackle during the season. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson recently gave Benedet a vote of confidence, but made it clear the second-year player still has work to do in his development. Center Drew Dalman fell on the sword (h/t Bear Report’s Zack Pearson) for snap issues in the team’s Week 7 win against the Saints. Rookie offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo has mostly been a non-factor. And don’t even get me started on the pre-snap penalties that seem to pop up every week.

And yet, despite an untested left tackle who is just one year removed from being an undrafted free agent signing out of Canada, three other new starters along the interior, plenty of problems, and the challenges that come with ushering in so many fresh faces in the trenches, the Bears’ offensive line is looking good. That group will be tested on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. I look forward to seeing how the unit performs in what looks to be a litmus test game.
