HUNTINGTON BEACH — Mission Viejo football coach Chad Johnson was the first to acknowledge that his Diablos weren’t at their best in their Alpha League game against Edison on Friday at Huntington Beach High School.

But with Ohio State-bound quarterback Luke Fahey guiding the offense, a talented group of receivers and a stingy defense, the Diablos had all the resources they needed for a 37-20 victory over the Chargers.

The Diablos (8-1, 2-0), who are ranked No.1 in Orange County, face Los Alamitos in the final game of the regular season Thursday, Oct. 30. The Diablos can lock up first place with a victory and go undefeated in the Alpha League for the second year in a row.

San Clemente came away with a mild upset victory over the Griffins on Friday, spoiling what could have been a showdown between two undefeated teams.

The Chargers (5-4, 0-2) will be looking for their first league victory when the play San Clemente on Friday, Oct 31.

While Johnson had plenty to be pleased with, he was annoyed by the number of penalties and said the offense has to do a better job of running the football.

“Obviously, when you have a quarterback as good as Luke Fahey and the receivers that we have, you’re going to be able to play football,” Johnson said. “But when you’re playing in November, weather could be a factor. You’ve got to be able to run the ball. If you can’t do that, then you’re going to have some games where you’re really going to struggle. So that is going to be our emphasis this week.”

Fahey completed 22 of 32 passes for 361 and two touchdowns and ran for a touchdown.

He topped 300 yards for the third game in a row and fifth time this season.

Fahey’s favorite target was Jack Junker, who had 10 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

The junior also ran for an 8-yard touchdown to give the Diablos an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Edison responded with an 80-yard scoring drive, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Sam Thompson to Brennan Vares.

But the Diablos held the Chargers scoreless in the second and third quarter.

Fahey connected with Junker on 14-yard touchdown in the third quarter and a 24-yard score in the fourth quarter, giving the Diablos a 37-13 lead.

“I think the long passes and the touchdowns kind of speaks for itself,” Fahey said. “I know coach Johnson works his tail off trying to figure out a game plan for the next opponent. It’s coach Johnson and his staff. I give all the props to him.”
