The latest a Traitor has ever been caught before now is episode six, when Alyssa was finally rooted out in the very first series, exposed by her fellow Traitor Amanda. The celebrities, meanwhile, are about to head into the seventh episode without banishing a Traitor. Why? As Claudia warned – because they’re famous.
Celebrity status comes with perks beyond freebies. People treat you differently. They want you, the celeb, to like them, so in turn they are very nice to you. These celebrities are so used to people putting them on a pedestal that they can’t see the wood for the trees when it comes to others duping them.

Well, they have been conditioned to expect the best in people. It’s quite a nice quality – their willingness to believe others isn’t born of the arrogance fame can bring, but the fact that they are given the tools to see the world through rose-tinted glasses. They think most people are nice. They want to believe that these people are all Faithfuls. Must be nice!
It seems the more famous you are, the worse you are at the game. Sir Stephen Fry (banished as of last night) consistently accused his fellow Faithfuls of being traitorous. Meanwhile, actor Ruth Codd and YouTuber Niko Omilana – arguably the least known players – were both gunning for Traitor Jonathan Ross, and their time in the castle ended early as a result.
The Faithfuls’ last hope seems to be former rugby pro Joe Marler, whose “big dog theory” that either Fry or Ross must be a Traitor simply because they are the biggest stars is bang on the money. He has spoken about how his place on the programme has been questioned by those who think he’s not famous enough to take part, but from where I’m sitting, that has been his greatest strength.

Unfortunately, it appears that sticking his head above the parapet has drawn the wrong sort of attention to him. Marler isn’t being nice and lovey dovey towards his fellow players, instead calling out Ross with a bold certainty that looks suspicious to his fellow Faithfuls. All of whom, instead of taking the hint, regard his brazenness and suspicion as strange – even traitorous – behaviour. Don’t be surprised when Faithfuls banish him next time they get a chance.

This new dynamic doesn’t make The Celebrity Traitors better or worse – just different. Normal people have nothing to lose and therefore have no qualms about going for one another full throttle. Celebs have their professional relationships and their public reputations to worry about. Add in the fact that they expect people to be nice to them, and the Traitors have a perfect cover to murder in plain sight.
No wonder they’re getting away with it.
