The spooky season is the perfect time to have fun with food with your children, and there are so many Halloween-themed treats to try — without being tricky.
Best-selling children’s cookery author Annabel Karmel has amassed a collection of snacks and meals children love over the years, and she shares them both on her website and popular app.
Here are three of her favourite dishes to serve at this time of year.

Makes 6
For the pizza dough
250g strong bread flour 2 tsp dried yeast 1 tbsp olive oil 150ml-175ml warm water Pinch of salt 1 tsp sundried tomato pasteFor the sauce
150g passata 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped Dash of sugarFor the decoration
Grated cheese Ham Red and green peppers Cheese slices (such as mozzarella) Black olives, whole Black olives, sliced Pepper-stuffed green olives, sliced Salad leaves Mini mozzarella ballsFirst make your dough. Measure out the flour, yeast, oil, water and salt into a mixing bowl.
Mix together to form a dough. Tip on to a work surface.
Dust with flour and knead until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl. Cover and leave to rise for one hour.
To make the tomato sauce, mix the passata, tomato purée, basil and sugar together in a bowl.
Preheat the oven to 200°C Fan.
Put the dough back on to the work surface. Divide into six balls. Roll out each ball to a circle about 12cm in diameter.
Place on two large baking sheets lined with baking paper.
Spread the tomato sauce over the bases. Sprinkle with grated cheese.
Bake in the oven for 15 to 18 minutes until golden and crisp.
Decorate your cooked pizzas with spooky faces as illustrated above.

Makes 8
1 madeira cake 100g butter, softened 175g icing sugar 1-2 tbsp milk For the decoration 150g desiccated coconut Lime green and orange food colouring Edible eyes White and black ready-to-roll fondant icingSlice the madeira cake into eight rectangles.
To make the buttercream, whisk the butter, icing sugar and milk together until light and fluffy. Spread over the pieces of cake.
Divide the desiccated coconut into two bowls. Add green food colouring to one bowl and orange to the other, and mix well until well coloured.
Coat the cakes in the coloured coconut mix.
To make large eyes, make small balls of white icing and very small balls of black icing and flatten them, then place the black circle on top of the white circle to make the eyeballs. Arrange the edible eyes on the cakes for the small eyes.

Makes 5 portions
For the meatballs
250g minced beef ½ onion, finely chopped ½ apple, peeled and grated 50g fresh breadcrumbs 25g Parmesan, grated 1 tsp thyme, chopped A few drops of Worcestershire sauceFor the sauce
2 tbsp olive oil 2 small onions, finely chopped 3 large cloves garlic, crushed 2 tins chopped tomatoes 3 tbsp tomato purée Dash of sugar Small bunch of basil, chopped 250g spaghetti Mini mozzarella balls Pitted black olives, slicedPut the meatball ingredients in a processor and whizz until finely chopped. Shape into 18 balls.
For the sauce, heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and fry for a few minutes. Add the garlic and fry for 20 seconds. Add the tomatoes, tomato purée, sugar and basil. Simmer for 15 minutes.
Heat a little oil in a frying pan. Add the meatballs and fry until golden and cooked through.
Cook the spaghetti in boiling water according to the packet instructions, drain and mix with the sauce.
Place the spaghetti in a bowl and arrange the meatballs on top.
Slice the mozzarella balls in half and place on top of the meatballs. Top with an olive slice to make the eyeballs.
Chef’s tip
If you can sit down to eat together, do it. Kids are so impressionable – they will want what you are having, so try new healthy nutritious foods with them. Enthusiasm is contagious.
You could also let the children choose the menu. It will make them feel included and make it a lot easier to encourage them to sit down at the dinner table – and hopefully eat their dinner!
