Blackhawks Goaltending Depth Worthy of Attention (and Trade Rumors) ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I do a lot of seemingly random checking on things as someone who is focused on all things Blackhawks. Whether it’s draft rankings for next year, performances from the Blackhawks’ prospects all over the world, trade rumors or transaction logs, there’s a lot of stuff to watch.

For example: the AHL transaction register tells us the Rockford IceHogs recalled goaltender Mitchell Weeks from Indy on Wednesday.

Not a big deal. I tweeted about it. Didn’t even really consider it noteworthy enough to drop it in my bullets on Thursday morning. There was a lot of other interesting/important stuff to consider for that this morning.

But the fact that Weeks was in Indy was a reminder that the Blackhawks have a strong pipeline in net. And that reality was brought up by Matt Larkin at Daily Faceoff when he wrote about the Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending situation on Thursday.

Will the #LetsGoOilers ever wake up and smell the mediocrity in net?If they do…here's a tiered shopping list of goalies they could target in a trade this season, ranging from low-ceiling stopgaps to pipe-dream stars: t.co/sUwi266ySd

Larkins’ piece wasn’t a glowing review of the position on the defending Western Conference champions. Rather, it was a statement about the mediocrity of their collection of netminders holding them back from their ultimate goal. He listed some potential trade targets for the Oilers this season — if they ever want to address it.

Blackhawks goalie Arvid Söderblom was listed in his “Betting on Youth” category. Here’s what Larkin wrote:

The Hawks need Söderblom for now as Spencer Knight’s backup, especially with Laurent Brossoit not close to returning from his serious knee injury. But Söderblom has just one season after this one at $2.75 million per year, and prospect Drew Commesso is approaching NHL-backup readiness, faring well with AHL Rockford. If the Hawks find themselves out of contention by winter, they could probably spare Söderblom, who quietly graded out above average in expected goals against per 60 last season, his performance masked by playing on such a bad team.

I’ve said this since the summer: I can absolutely see a scenario where the Blackhawks receive calls on both Söderblom and Commesso this season. Söderblom signed a two-year deal this summer and Commesso is an RFA in 2026. The Blackhawks also added 22-year-old Russian netminder Stanislav Berezhnoy on a two-year deal this summer. Prospect Adam Gajan is off to a terrific start at Minnesota-Duluth as well. And Knight isn’t going anywhere for hopefully a long, long time.

Blackhawks Organizational Depth

For years there were justified complaints from Blackhawks fans and media about the lack of any future at the position in the organization. Once Corey Crawford took over in net, the Blackhawks effectively stopped trying to develop goaltenders.

Between drafting Crawford in the second round (No. 52 overall) in the 2003 NHL Draft and selecting Gajan in the second round (No. 35 overall) in 2023 — 20 (twenty!) years later — the Blackhawks did not draft a goaltender in an entire draft class eight times.

During those 20 years, the Blackhawks drafted a goaltender earlier than the fourth round only four times: Josh Unice (third round, 2007), Kent Simpson (second round, 2010), Wouter Peeters (third round, 2016) and Commesso in 2020. Those four goaltenders have appeared in three combined NHL games. Two of those have been by Commesso.

Now, the Blackhawks suddenly have enviable depth at the goaltending position. Like many other positions in the organization, the Blackhawks’ cupboard is over-full. There are more bodies than needed on the NHL roster. And that’s a beautiful thing.

So rumors like the one floated by Larkin don’t shock me. And they won’t as the 2025-26 season progresses.
