I’m sure it’s all gonna be developing over a long horizon, and it doesn’t look at the moment like there’s a connection to sports betting or rigging games or whatever. That’s a relatively huge deal for a first-time manager, and a sign of just how eager Buster Posey and the Giants were to poach Vitello, and make him the first ever college head coach to go straight into the manager’s seat with no prior pro experience. And the Rockies are on the verge of hiring an actually-impressive executive for their top baseball job. Extra good feeling to have Craig Counsell managing the Cubs right about now. Evan Drellich reports that Emmanuel Clase wants to pitch in Venezuela this offseason, but the Guardians will not grant permission. Clase is still under a gambling investigation by MLB, and has been out since July. The league in the Dominican Republic already barred him from pitching there, so Venezuela was a back-up option. Without commenting on the merits of the investigation, which I expect came with some concerning circumstantial evidence from the jump, I do think these things have gotta go a lot faster, right? Imagine a world where Clase, 27, is innocent – he’s now effectively missing out on not only half of a big league season in his prime, but also chances to pitch in Latin America for an entire season. Can’t get that time back, even if he’s ultimately cleared. (If he’s not ultimately cleared, it obviously won’t matter anymore in his case, because he’d probably be done at that point. I’m just saying in these types of investigations in general, if there’s any chance a guy is innocent, being expeditious should be of the utmost importance. Playing careers and prime years are relatively short.) A related point from Guardians blog Covering the Corner: the length of this investigation is putting the Guardians in a rough spot because they will very soon have to set about the offseason work of building out their roster for 2026, and may have to do so not knowing which way this thing is gonna go. It could change their efforts DRAMATICALLY if Clase and/or teammate Luis Ortiz are cleared in this investigation.
