Nobody Wants This was a huge word-of-mouth hit for Netflix when it arrived in September last year. The love story between an agnostic podcaster and a hot rabbi, the series was a sweet – yet not quite sickly – will they/won’t they romcom for, by, and about millennials. In Kristen Bell’s Joanne we saw our sarcastic, jaded selves, in Adam Brody’s sexy, caring Noah, we saw the ideal man, ready to sweep us off our feet. No wonder we – and they – fell in love.
Despite their religious differences, season one – spoiler alert – had the happiest of endings. Noah chose Joanne over a promotion to senior rabbi (which he could only take if his partner converted) – or so we thought. Turns out that they both have very different interpretations of their snog: Noah believing that Joanne was agreeing to convert at some point in the future, Joanne thinking he was giving her the green light to never take that step.
It’s this misunderstanding – which comes to light during their first dinner party hosted as a couple – that lays the foundation for season two.
What happens after happily ever after is a well-trodden but nevertheless intriguing concept – particularly in the case of characters as beloved as Noah and Joanne. But laying the exact same problems at their feet for another 10 episodes makes the second series of Nobody Wants This frustratingly repetitive.

Some of their issues cause more upset than others – the fact that Noah wants to have a “night off” from sharing a bed is more of a hurdle than the fact that he wants to celebrate her mother’s birthday properly – but the ease with which they are solved ultimately takes away any tension from their once high-stakes relationship.

It’s a difficult line to tread – watching Noah and Joanne live in harmony for a series would make for dull television. But inventing non-issues with no consequences is even worse. What’s more, the central issue of Joanne’s willingness to convert is largely ignored until the final few episodes, then crowbarred in to fabricate a disappointing, tedious crescendo.
Thank god, then, that the other characters get more of a look in this series. Joanne’s sister Morgan (played by the hilarious Justine Lupe) falls in love with her therapist; their mother Lynn (Stephanie Faracy) has her own religious epiphany; Noah’s older brother Sasha (Timothy Simons) struggles to come to terms with his failing marriage. In a better series, these storylines would be a distraction from the main romance, but this time around they’re a nice break from the drudgery.
The magic of the first season has been completely shattered (Photo: Erin Simkin/Netflix)It’s a crying shame that Noah and Joanne should be reduced to two anxious, lovesick nuisances. Brody and Bell’s chemistry is still off the charts, and they do their best to make their characters still likeable, but we fell in love with their willingness to throw caution to the wind and choose each other against the odds. Here, they are overly prudent and scared to continue on the same path. You just want to shake them.
Nobody Wants This is the perfect example of why some series don’t need a follow up. The magic of the first season has been completely shattered by this disappointing, unnecessary second. Last year it convinced me that happily ever afters do really exist. Now I know it was all just a lie.
