Speaking with Ultimate Classic Rock, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, who is very much a guitar legend in his own right, reflected on Hendrix’s second album, Axis: Bold as Love, ahead of the new box set dropping on Friday, November 7.
Gibbons and Hendrix actually became good friends shortly before ZZ Top was formed. Gibbons played for a psychedelic rock band called The Moving Sidewalks who opened for The Jimi Hendrix Experience on a U.S. tour in 1968.
Additionally, Hendrix gave Gibbons a very precious gift that later became a piece of rock history. While ZZ Top recorded their sixth studio album, Degüello, Gibbons used a special guitar to record “A Fool For Your Stockings.”
“Interestingly, when we recorded that song, I was playing the Fender Strat that Jimi Hendrix gave me when we were traveling together, and for some reason the guitar wasn’t working through the amp,” Gibbons added. “We wound up plugging the guitar straight into the board, and that’s why it’s such a clean tone on that particular track.”
ZZ Top was formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas, and originally consisted of Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard. Today, Gibbons and Beard, 76, continue performing together, with Elwood Francis on bass following Hill’s death in 2021.
