Around the NFL: Jets Owner Woody Johnson Backs Glenn, Slams Fields, Vikings Sticking with Wentz (For Now) More ...Middle East

Jets owner Woody Johnson didn’t sound like a man ready to blow things up — even if his 0-7 team might be begging for it.

Woody Johnson Backs Aaron Glenn; Blunt on Justin Fields

Johnson arrived at the NFL’s fall meetings this week, and reporters surrounded him before he could get past the revolving doors. “I don’t really have any comments,” he said… right before talking for seven minutes straight.

The main takeaway? He’s standing by head coach Aaron Glenn — for now — and not exactly thrilled with quarterback Justin Fields. “I see what you see,” Johnson told reporters. “But I see more hope than you do. You can’t win with hope, but it helps.” Then came the kicker: “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that we’ve got. He has the ability, but something just isn’t jibing.”

Johnson’s frustration was pretty straightforward. Fields was benched for Tyrod Taylor at halftime of Sunday’s loss to the Panthers after another rough outing — 91 total passing yards, no touchdowns, and 12 sacks over the last two games. Johnson praised the defense and special teams but didn’t mince words about the offense: “If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.”

Still, the Jets owner says he’s not meddling in the quarterback decision heading into Week 8. “That’s completely up to the coach,” he said. “I’m not going to be involved at all.”

Vikings Sticking with Wentz for Another Week

The Vikings will stay the course at quarterback for at least one more week, after head coach Kevin O’Connell said on Tuesday that J.J. McCarthy still isn’t quite ready. O’Connell confirmed that rookie J.J. McCarthy will not start Thursday night against the Chargers in Los Angeles as he continues to recover from the high-ankle sprain suffered in Week 2.

McCarthy took part in an on-field workout on Tuesday but isn’t ready for live reps yet. O’Connell said that if this were a Sunday game, “maybe it would be a different story,” but the short week made the decision straightforward. Minnesota wants to avoid setbacks in what they still view as a developmental season for their young quarterback.

For now, veteran Carson Wentz will make his fifth straight start. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer will back him up, while McCarthy will dress as the emergency third quarterback. The Vikings also opened running back Aaron Jones’ 21-day window to return from a hamstring injury, signaling some long-awaited reinforcements could be on the way soon.

O’Connell has stressed that the team’s plan for McCarthy hasn’t changed — it’s about protecting his long-term health and ensuring he’s ready to manage the pocket fluidly again before returning. The coaching staff wants him to get a whole week of practice under his belt before taking snaps, making Week 9 at Detroit the logical target for his return. They’re encouraged by his progress and believe he’s close, but not quite there.

In the meantime, the Vikings believe Wentz gives them a chance to stay competitive against a Chargers defense that’s been reeling. He’s 2–2 as the starter and has helped stabilize the offense, but turnovers and protection issues have prevented Minnesota from finding rhythm. A win on Thursday could keep the team afloat in the NFC wild card race — and buy McCarthy another week to get right.
