Basketball is Back, NBC is Back, Michael Jordan is Back, Josh Giddey is Back, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

THE FIVE BEST WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: CHICAGO BULLS BASKETBALL IS BACK!

The NBA season officially tipped off on Tuesday night with an epic double-overtime matchup between the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder. While I’m not sure anyone would have predicted that exhilarating of an opening game, there is no question that it felt like fans were in store for something big when first flipping the channel to NBC. The league’s return to the network after a two-decade-long hiatus was long overdue. Sure, some of it is nostalgia-based, but few outlets are better at making an event feel like this big deal. I really do think this partnership is about to do wonders again for the league, especially as they try to change how the NBA as a whole is discussed. There has been a lot of negativity around the game of basketball in recent years, and NBC appears ready to focus more on uplifting the game than criticizing it. Also, how freakin’ awesome was it to see Michael Jordan during halftime? While I don’t love the fact that it seems like NBC will milk one long interview over the course of a full season, I can’t deny that the first taste of that interview was awesome. Not only did we get an unexpected story about Jordan being terrified to shoot a free throw in recent months, but his emotional attachment to the sport instantly jumped off the screen.

“Love it like you wouldn’t believe,” Michael Jordan said. “In all honesty, I wish I could take a magic pill, put on shorts, and go out and play the game of basketball today because that’s who I am. That type of competition. That type of competitiveness. It’s what I live for. I miss that. I miss that aspect of playing the game of basketball. Being able to challenge myself against what people see as great basketball.”

See, this brutal honesty is what continues to make MJ stand out among the rest. He was and is the greatest ambassador the game has ever had. If there is anyone in any sport who has reason to be perfectly content with his career and life, it would be His Airness. Yet, you can sense the utterly genuine void that exists within him. Jordan is a reminder that the best of the best don’t play sports to make money or become a household name. The only way you become the best is by having an indescribable love for the game. Incredible. Last thought on the NBA’s return to NBC (for now): I still can’t believe the Chicago Bulls will not play a single game on the network this season. Yes, they will have one game on Peacock, but receiving the full NBC experience will have to wait. And that just speaks to the frustrating state of the organization. The Bulls were a large part of what made the NBA on NBC a must-watch for fans everywhere. They should be far more relevant today, and this serves as another painful reminder of that. © David Banks-Imagn Images Anyway, let the games begin! The Chicago Bulls will welcome the Detroit Pistons into the United Center tonight for their first game of 2025-26. FanDuel currently has the Bulls as a 3-point underdog, which may be a tad generous! While there were undoubtedly some encouraging things we saw during the five-game preseason slate, there were also some major red flags. The defense remains a major work in progress, and I’m especially concerned about the absence of Zach Collins in a game like this. Detroit re-built a reputation for being one of the more aggressive teams in the post last season, averaging the fifth-most points in the paint per game and registering the fifth-highest rebounding percentage. Collins is easily the team’s most physical player at the five, so I have a feeling the defense tonight could start to look a lot like last year. Need I remind you that the Bulls allowed the single-most points in the paint per game in 2024-25? As for the offensive side of the ball, the Bulls are really going to need Josh Giddey to counter Cade Cunningham. Especially without Coby White’s explosive three-level scoring ability out of the lineup, Giddey is going to have to be a nearly perfect combination of aggressive and diligent. His job tonight isn’t simply to set his teammates up with some open looks and limit turnovers, but he will have to establish his own strong presence in the paint. Keeping up the downhill assertiveness we saw from him to end last season is essential. This feels especially true when we consider that the Pistons sent opposing teams to the line the third most last season. Giddey’s goal tonight should be to do his damage at the charity stripe. Speaking of the new $100 million man, he sat down with Camron Smith of CHSN to talk about this offseason’s process and this upcoming season. Give that a watch!
