The Disney-owned Golden Oak Ranch movie and TV studio backlot has been used since the 1950s to film everything from “The Mickey Mouse Club” to “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

The 900-acre movie-making facility in Newhall is located about 70 miles north of Disneyland.

The aerial tests over Golden Oak Ranch could be for a drone show tied to the Disneyland fireworks show, “World of Color” water show at Disney California Adventure, any Disney theme park in the world, the Disney Cruise Lines or an upcoming special event.

Disney theme parks in Florida, France, Japan and China all boast nighttime spectaculars featuring aerial drones.

Disneyland ultimately backed out of plans to include aerial drones in the “World of Color” water show after U.S. government regulations placed restrictions on the nighttime spectaculars featuring flying robots that Walt Disney Imagineering helped pioneer.

Disneyland conducted drone tests for a Tangled lantern sequence in the “Disneyland Forever” fireworks show that was ultimately abandoned due to lack of Federal Aviation Administration approvals.
