The White House on Tuesday dismissed criticism of the recent demolition of part of the East Wing as "manufactured outrage."
In a detailed press release, the White House accused the press of “clutching their pearls” over President Trump’s planned ballroom, calling it “a bold, necessary addition that echoes the storied history of improvements and renovations.”
The release goes on to list past renovations and expansions at the White House throughout the 20th century and into the beginning of the 21st century. According to the White House’s list, the latest projects took place in 2020, when President Trump and first lady Melania Trump completed a new tennis pavilion, and in 2009, when former President Obama resurfaced the south-grounds tennis court into a basketball court. The first project listed is former President Theodore Roosevelt’s construction of the West Wing.
On Monday, the White House started the process of tearing down part of the White House East Wing to begin construction.
Trump has said that the project, which is slated to cost $200 million, will be paid for by himself and donors.
Last week, the president hosted a dinner for donors helping to fund the ballroom’s construction in the East Room. Attendees included representatives from Microsoft, Google, Palantir and other companies, as well as wealthy figures such as Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss.
"We're putting up our own money, you probably hear the beautiful sound of construction to the back, that's music to my ears, when I hear that sound it reminds me of money, in this case it reminds me of lack of money because I'm paying for it,” Trump said speaking to Republican senators at the White House on Tuesday.
However, the move has elicited criticism and widespread media coverage.
Author and historian Douglas Brinkley likened the move to “defacing a Michelangelo sculpture” and “slashing a Rembrandt painting," according to WTOP.
