Now that Napier is out of the Gators’ coaching seat, the Bulldogs may face stiffer long-term competition from their date to the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. However, Kirby Smart doesn’t seem so sure. When speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, he gave Napier props for his approach, particularly in the recruiting space, during his Florida tenure.
“First of all, I have a lot of respect for Billy,” Smart said. I’ve known Billy a long time … He’s a guy that thinks things out really well. I think they’ve recruited well and done a good job.”
Feelings aside, it’s clear Napier’s off-field recruiting victories didn’t translate to enough on-field wins. Because of this, Billy Gonzales will oversee the Gators when they face the Bulldogs next Saturday.
With a bye week to prep, Florida could change its approach on both sides of the ball in advance of the UGA game. Smart doesn’t believe the Gators can change too much schematically in 2 weeks, but is perfectly aware of how coaching changes have sparked strong performances throughout the country this season.
