Vice President Vance arrived in Israel on Monday, bolstering efforts by President Trump’s top Middle East envoys to reinforce a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that is holding despite outbursts of violence on both sides.
Vance met for two hours with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s top officials and architects of the ceasefire and peace plan for the Middle East, upon arriving in Israel.
The vice president is also visiting the Civilian Military Coordination Center, the U.S.-led mission overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire. Vance is expected to hold private briefings with members of the military. He is also expected to address the press later on Monday.
The coordination center is being staffed by 200 U.S. troops but those soldiers are not expected to go into Gaza or participate in any fighting. Trump’s 20-point peace plan calls for an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to take over from Hamas and ensure security to prevent a resurgence of Israeli military operations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday met with the head of Egyptian intelligence to discuss Trump’s peace framework, the office of the Israeli Prime Minister said in a statement. Egypt is leading training of Palestinian police forces to provide security in Gaza, and is pushing for a United Nations Security Council Resolution to legitimize an ISF to enter the strip.
The ceasefire broked by Trump between Israel and Hamas, first announced on Oct. 10, has held for nearly 11 days despite major strains. Hamas rejected on Sunday that members of its group participated in an armed attack on Israeli soldiers in the southern city of Rafah.
Both sides issued statements reinforcing their commitment to the ceasefire, despite Israel carrying out strikes against what it said were terrorist threats in the strip.
Hamas on Monday handed over the body of a hostage who Israel identified as Sergeant Major Tal Haimi, who was killed responding to Hamas’s terrorist attack on Oct. 7, 2023. His body was taken into the Gaza Strip and held over the entirety of the more than two-year war.
Hamas is still working to retrieve and hand over bodies of deceased hostages to Israel as part of the ceasefire deal. Meanwhile, Israel is expected to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, while withdrawing its military to designated areas.
Trump on Monday warned that Hamas would be “eradicated” if it failed to live up to its part of the ceasefire deal.
