Monaco vs Tottenham Prediction: Spurs Look to Bounce Back From Weekend Defeat ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Tottenham are ranked as the slight favourites by the Opta supercomputer when they visit Monaco on Wednesday. We preview Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League game at Stade Louis II.

Monaco vs Tottenham: The Key Stats

The Opta supercomputer has Tottenham as slight favourites to secure victory, with a 41.2% win probability to Monaco’s 33.8%. Tottenham have won just one of their previous seven Champions League away matches. Monaco have only lost one of their eight home matches against English sides in the competition.

Thomas Frank will look to break new ground for a Tottenham Hotspur manager as Spurs aim to rebound from defeat against Aston Villa in their Champions League trip to Monaco on Wednesday.

The Lilywhites were beaten 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, despite taking an early lead through Rodrigo Bentancur, and will be keen for a swift response at Stade Louis II.

Frank has overseen a 1-0 victory over Villarreal and a comeback 2-2 draw at Bodø/Glimt in the league phase, and could become the first Spurs manager to go unbeaten in his first three Champions League matches.

Moreover, only in the 2017-18 edition of the tournament have Spurs managed to go unbeaten in their opening three games, winning two and drawing one under Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs have not been particularly good on their travels in the Champions League in recent years, though, winning just one of their last seven away games in the competition (D2 L4). However, they may take some comfort in the fact that solitary win did come in France courtesy of a 2-1 triumph at Marseille in November 2022.

Pedro Porro could be a creative outlet again for Spurs. He registered the assist for their first goal against Bodø/Glimt, and the Spanish full-back has created the most chances (4) and made the most line-breaking passes (18) of any Spurs player in the competition this term.

Mohammed Kudus has also had a fine start to the campaign, having completed five dribbles in just 30 minutes of game time against Bodø/Glimt, as many as the rest of the Spurs team combined (5) and the most by a substitute for the club in a Champions League match.

The visitors may also take heart from Monaco’s recent home form in Europe’s premier competition. Since winning four consecutive home matches in the 2016-17 edition, including one over Tottenham, Monaco have managed just three victories from 13 home games in the competition, suffering nine defeats and drawing the other.

Additionally, they have conceded two-plus goals in each of their last three Champions League matches, and have done so on four consecutive occasions only once (between November 2017 and October 2018).

Monaco did come from behind twice to draw with Manchester City on Matchday 2, though. That represented the first time they had avoided defeat have been behind in a home Champions League match since September 2016 against Bayer Leverkusen, losing nine in between. It was also the first time they had twice come from behind to avoid defeat since a 2-2 draw with Rangers back in November 2000.

Eric Dier played 365 games in all competitions for Spurs between 2014 and 2023 but will sadly miss this reunion through injury. Monaco will also be without former Manchester United ace Paul Pogba, as well as fellow midfielders Denis Zakaria and Lamine Camara. Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky is still sidelined, too.

Cristian Romero remains a doubt for Tottenham after withdrawing from the team before the Villa defeat with an adductor injury sustained in the warm-up. Destiny Udogie was also absent with a knee issue and is expected to miss out, while Yves Bissouma was re-injured while playing for Mali over the international break.

Monaco vs Tottenham Head-to-Head

This game marks the fifth occasion that Monaco and Tottenham will face off in European competition.

Monaco failed to win the first two meetings (D1 L1) but were victorious home and away in the 2016-17 Champions League group stage, emerging 2-1 winners on both occasions.

Furthermore, the Ligue 1 outfit have tasted defeat just once in their eight home matches against English sides in the competition, winning five and drawing two of the other seven. The lone defeat they suffered in those games came against Arsenal in March 2015, with the Gunners triumphing 2-0.

Monaco vs Tottenham Prediction

Tottenham are rated as the slight favourites with the Opta supercomputer, with a 41.2% win probability from the 10,000 simulations conducted.

However, it is not a huge advantage, with Monaco rated as a 33.8% chance, and the draw a 25.1% likelihood.

In terms of the competition overall, Tottenham are currently expected to place 10th in the league phase and have a 27.3% probability of reaching the quarter-finals. Their chances of winning the competition stand at 1.2%.

Monaco are predicted to finish 26th in the initial phase, with their chances of making the last 16 (2.3%) and last eight (5.5%) not rated particularly highly.
