Checking in from Big 12 football central: All teams have played four conference games and title game favorites are beginning to emerge.

Arizona State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) shook things up a bit on Saturday with a 26-22 upset win over then-ranked No. 7 Texas Tech whereas BYU and Cincinnati are the only remaining undefeated teams in Big 12 play.

When we lasted checked in on how the conference is shaping up, no team had even gotten its feet wet against Big 12 competition but now about half the schedule is in the rearview mirror.

A look at the current big themes to watch for the rest of the way:

And then there were 2…

No. 11 BYU held off a late bid by Utah in the Holy War to stay unbeaten overall and in conference play while Cincinnati stomped Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

The two squads still have to match up on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Cincinnati and the kickoff time is TBD.

A peek at each team’s resume through Week 8:

BYU – one win versus Top 25 opponent (24-21 vs. No. 23 Utah), double-overtime win at Arizona (33-27), win in Boulder against Colorado (24-21) Cincinnati – one win versus Top 25 opponent (38-30 vs. No. 14 Iowa State), tight win at Kansas (37-34), lone loss to Nebraska at neutral site (20-17, Week 1)

Both teams’ quarterbacks — Bear Bachmeier for BYU and Brendan Sorsby for Cincinnati — have experienced great rushing success. They trail Utah’s Devon Dampier who has 442 yards on 80 carries. Bachmeier has the second-most rushing yards for a Big 12 QB with 359 on 82 carries and Sorsby has the third-most at 340 but has done so on just 58 carries (5.9 yards per carry).

BYU has been living dangerously thus far into conference play with three of its four games being decided by one score. In addition to newly-ranked No. 21 Cincinnati, still has to play at Iowa State (Saturday), at No. 14 Texas Tech (Nov. 8) and versus TCU (Nov. 15), the latter receiving votes in the latest AP poll.

On Cincinnati’s plate, which has three single-digit wins in Big 12 play, the Bearcats have Baylor at home (Saturday), at Utah (Nov. 1), versus Arizona (Nov. 15) and close at TCU following a showdown with BYU.

The Week 8 college football rankings featured four Big 12 programs: BYU (No. 11), Texas Tech (14), Cincinnati (21) and ASU (24).

Utah, which fell out of the poll after being ranked No.23, received 40 votes — theoretically No. 27 as the team with the second-most votes — and Houston and TCU got 34 and two votes, respectively.

ASU football remaining schedule outlook

Having collected perhaps the most consequential win of his ASU coaching career, Kenny Dillingham said it’s going to be important for the Sun Devils to maintain the same level of intensity moving forward.

“Any time you have a win like this, it rejuvenizes your program, especially after the embarrassment of … two weeks ago,” Dillingham said postgame Saturday. “But the key is that it doesn’t make you complacent. You know, the reason we could win this game is because we lost the game prior.

“We don’t win this game if we beat Utah. We don’t win this game if it’s close against Utah. … The challenge is through the praise, can we continue to have (the same intensity)?”

Past Houston, keeping up the intensity will be key in a tough road environment at Iowa State (Nov. 1) and at Colorado on Nov. 22.

ASU has a second bye on Nov. 8.

The only game that won’t require any racketing it up? The 2025 Territorial Cup in Tempe against rival Arizona on Black Friday.
