Dodgers Will Reportedly Target Kyle Tucker in Free Agency ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We’ll call this the “duh” report of the early offseason, as you can presume the Los Angeles Dodgers will forever and always target any elite free agent like Kyle Tucker, attempting to lure them with the promise of multiple rings, and hundreds of millions of dollars when they turn 60.

Outgoing Chicago Cubs free agent Kyle Tucker could be the next recipient of the Dodgers’ Publisher’s Clearinghouse-style payouts:

In all seriousness, despite the Dodgers’ wealth of talent, the outfield is one area where they could pretty clearly justify spending more to upgrade. The Michael Conforto idea pretty clearly didn’t work out, Tommy Edman kinda turned into a pumpkin this year, and Mookie Betts is now a (very good) shortstop. Andy Pages was great overall this year in center field, and Teoscar Hernández can still hit. But the latter is gonna be 34 and plays abysmal defense.

All in all, yeah, you could argue that a corner outfielder is a pretty big need for the Dodgers. There are two counters, but they are pretty easily rebutted. For one, the Dodgers are so good in literally every other spot that they can afford not to have a star at every position (but they have the money and the need, so why stop?). For another, four of their top five prospects are outfielders, two of whom have already reached Double-A (but prospects are not guarantees, and the Dodgers can always make trades if they have to – in fact, one of those outfielders, Zyhir Hope, was acquired precisely because a previous top prospect, Michael Busch, was crowded out!).

Ultimately, the Kyle Tucker free agency is going to feature pursuits from many clubs, not just the Dodgers. I expect every major club to check in, and then some surprises like the Tampa Bay Rays (given his home and their new owner).

It’s still TBD whether the Cubs will be seriously involved, though I’ll stick to my gut that they are more of a “if the top of his market doesn’t quite work out, we’ll talk about a creative deal” type suitor. I have a hard time seeing Tucker get a $400+ million deal given the uneven and injured 2025 season, but if that’s out there for him – heck, probably even $300 million – the Cubs will absolutely not be seriously in the mix.

Of course, if it’s from the Dodgers, that $400 million deal for Kyle Tucker will actually be $50 million, with $350 million deferred until 2085, so we’ll have to remember to do some present-day-value calculations when the time comes.
