Less than half an hour later Kharun was back in the water again in the 50 freestyle final, aiming to improve on his 3rd-place finish last week. He bettered both his position and the time, dropping from 20.89 to 20.72, taking the win over countryman Liendo.
Liendo was close behind in the pair’s second battle of the evening (Liendo was 3rd in the 100 fly in 49.56), clocking a time of 20.87 that stands up as his 2nd-fastest ever. That is just over a tenth of a second off his personal best and former Canadian Record of 20.76, set when winning bronze at the 2021 Short Course World Championships.
Kharun’s swim tonight shaved 0.04 seconds from that mark, giving the ASU swimmer his sixth individual National Record and tenth in total. This is his first record in a stroke other than fly, as the form he showed last year in yards looks to have translated well into meters.
Kharun’s previous best time stood at 20.80, set on the leadoff leg of the silver medal-winning mixed 4×50 free relay at short course worlds this past December. He was out in an identical 10.11 on the first 25 of both swims, but came home eight-hundredths faster last night.
He now stands as the joint-22nd fastest man in history, tied with Chris Guiliano and Szebastian Szabo.
