Finally, his big brother Charles, strongly assisted by Prince William, decided that enough was enough. Andrew had to be publicly humiliated for the good of the monarchy. And about time, too.
The Palace wielded its might and, rather than requiring Parliament to strip the Prince of his dukedom, it twisted his arm just enough to make him squeal that he would no longer use his title or the honours conferred on him. It was a brotherly concession by the King, allowing his sibling at least a semblance of a voluntary exit.
In his curt statement, the Prince – for Prince he must remain, in accordance with his birthright – made a point of repeating that he vigorously denied the accusations against him. That’s as may be. But did he not see the irony of insisting that he had decided, as always, to “put his duty to his family and country first”?

Is that why you continued your friendship with a convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein? Is that why you lied to the BBC in your infamous Newsnight interview, claiming you had ceased all contact with Epstein when in fact you had emailed him, saying, “Let’s play again soon!!!”? Is that why you chose to associate yourself with an alleged Chinese spy?

That became the tipping point. The King and his small band of working royals must have found it deeply frustrating to have their carefully planned engagements repeatedly overshadowed by yet another sleazy headline about the ex-Duke.
Whatever the truth of the allegations against him, the poison had begun to infect the reputation of the monarchy itself. And that had to be stemmed.
It cannot have been easy for the elder brother to summon his sibling to what must have been a deeply awkward discussion. Charles is a sentimental man who yearns for harmony in all aspects of life.
But, at last, he has done the deed. Andrew has been publicly shamed and, short of banishing him from the Kingdom, Charles has gone about as far as he can.
Family relations will, undoubtedly, remain under considerable strain. But the monarchy is stronger for having this canker cut out.
