For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Meredith Roberts of North Tonawanda, New York, has announced her verbal commitment to continue her education and swimming career at Fairfield University. Roberts currently attends North Tonawanda High School and swims year-round for the Town of Tonawanda Titans Swim Club. She will arrive in Connecticut for the 2026–2027 season.
Roberts confirmed the commitment in an email to SwimSwam, writing:
I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the Division 1 Level at Fairfield University! I want to thank my family, friends, and teammates for their support through my swimming journey. I am incredibly grateful to the Town of Tonawanda Titans’ Coaches Scott and Tim, as well as my athletic trainer Matt. I also want to thank Coach Jake and Coach Emma for giving me this amazing opportunity! Go Stags!
Roberts, a breaststroke specialist, competed at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) State Championship last November, where she placed fourth in the 100 breast (1:04.72) and 10th in the 200 IM (2:09.50). She dropped three-tenths from her best in the 100 breast and five-hundredths in the 200 IM.
A few months later, at the WEBS Open Championships, she won the 100 breast (1:04.52), 200 breast (2:24.01), 200 IM (2:07.96), and 400 IM (4:37.08)—all personal bests except for the 200 breast, where her best remains 2:20.86 from March 2024. Beyond her individual swims, she helped five relays place in the top 10. She split 30.91 and 1:07.57 on the breast legs of both runner-up medley relays, produced 1:58.69 on the bronze medal-winning 800 free relay, 24.77 on the fifth-place mixed 200 free relay, 25.65 on the ninth-place 200 free relay, and 57.03 on the 400 free relay that hit the wall 10th.
Roberts concluded the season at Speedo Sectionals at the end of March, where she touched 16th in the 100 breast (1:05.20) and 21st in the 200 breast (2:23.33). While she was off her lifetime bests in both events, her 200 time was her fastest of the season and the third-quickest of her career. She also swam breaststroke splits of 30.74 and 1:04.34 on the medley relays — with the 400 medley finishing 18th and the 200 medley 22nd. Her 100 split was the fastest she has ever gone on a relay and was nearly two-tenths quicker than her flat-start time.
Though it’s still early in the 2025-26 season, she hit a best time of 1:04.31 at a high school dual meet versus Grand Island on Wednesday, and also clocked a career-best 58.40 in the 100 fly, winning both events. She’s setting herself up for a strong season, with the NYSPHSAA State on the docket next month.
Top SCY Times:
100 Breaststroke: 1:04.31 200 Breaststroke: 2:20.86 200 IM: 2:07.96 400 IM: 4:37.08Under the direction first-year head coach Jake Lichter, of the Stags took second for the second consecutive season at the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship title, 169 points behind winners Niagara University.
Roberts is a huge pick-up for Fairfield as her best time in the 100 breast would have landed her in the A-final at the last season’s MAAC Championships. Additionally, her best times in the 200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM would have been fast enough to make the B-finals in those events.
According to the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Roberts would have ranked second in the 100 breast, fourth in the 200 breast and 400 IM, and fifth in the 200 IM. Sophomore Tone Sandsjo (1:00.92) and junior Cailey Stockwell (2:18.95) led the team in the breaststroke events, while senior Erini Pappas (2:03.57) and junior Caroline Gray (4:25.38) were the top IMers.
Roberts will overlap one year with Sandsjo, and the two should make strong training partners, especially for the 200 breast, where Roberts’ best of 2:20.86 is close to Sandsjo’s 2:18.40.
Roberts joins Gracie Lowney and Simona Bogdanova as the only publicized recruits in the Stags’ class of 2030.
