New York GOP shuts down state's Young Republicans over group chat ...Middle East

News by : (The Hill) -

The New York Republican State Committee’s leaders unanimously voted to disband the Empire State’s Young Republicans on Friday after screenshots from a Telegram chat exposed members using antisemitic and racist language.

“The Young Republicans was already grossly mismanaged, and vile language of the sort made in the group chat has no place in our party or its subsidiary organizations,” New York GOP Chair Ed Cox said in a Friday statement.

The explosive chat, first reported by Politico, was filled with Young Republican leaders from New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont. Peter Giunta, chief of staff for New York Assemblyman Michael O’Reilly, allegedly created the chat while campaigning to become the group’s chair.

“I love Hitler,” one of the messages associated with Giunta read, according to Politico.

Vermont state Sen. Samuel Douglass (R) was also revealed as a participant in the Telegram chat. While Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) called on Douglass to resign, Vice President Vance said the "kids" in the message thread should not face career ending punishments.

“We’re not canceling kids because they do something stupid in a group chat,” Vance said.

“The reality is that kids do stupid things. Especially young boys, they tell edgy, offensive jokes. Like, that’s what kids do,” Vance said. “And I really don’t want us to grow up in a country where a kid telling a stupid joke — telling a very offensive, stupid joke — is cause to ruin their lives.”

However, other party leaders have strongly condemned the contents discovered in the private online chat.

“Obviously, that is not the principles of the Republican Party. We stand for the founding principles of America,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said during a Thursday press conference.

“You want me to articulate them for you right now? Individual freedom, limited government, rule of law, peace through strength, fiscal responsibility, free markets, human dignity, the things that lead to human flourishing.”

Alex Degrasse, a senior adviser to New York Rep. Elise Stefanik (R) said she “calls for any NY Young Republicans responsible for these horrific comments in this chat to step down immediately," in a statement to ABC News.

While she said none of the chat members was employed in her office, Giunta did bestow Stefanik with the Congresswoman of the Year Award for the New York Young Republicans chapter in August.

At the time, she said Giunta demonstrated “tremendous leadership.”

“We need a new generation of leadership and the YRs will be a critical part of our mission to Save NY!” she added in the post on X.
