Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin said in an interview published on Friday that he believes most Virginians have accepted the apology from the party’s state attorney general nominee Jay Jones for recently unearthed violent text messages.
In an interview with Politico, Martin called Jones’ text messages sent in 2022 about shooting former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R ) “reckless and unacceptable” and that Jones would agree with that characterization.
“He has taken responsibility for what he said, and he’s apologized to the former speaker and to Virginians,” Martin told the outlet. “I believe in free and fair elections, and Virginia voters are the ones that will have to make this decision, and each race is their own, and you know, Virginians will make a final decision on who they want to be their next attorney general.”
“I believe that most Virginians have accepted that apology and that they'll elect Jay Jones as the next attorney general,” he said.
Jones, who was not in elected office at the time, sent texts about shooting Gilbert to Republican state Del. Carrie Coyner in 2022.
“Three people, two bullets,” Jones wrote in a text to Coyner about Gilbert.
“Gilbert, hitler, and pol pot,” Jones wrote. “Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.”
“Spoiler: put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time,” Jones told Coyner.
Coyner, in response, told Jones to stop.
Jones apologized for the texts earlier this month after they were released and during Thursday’s Virginia attorney general debate in Richmond.
However, the scandal has rocked races up and down the ballot in the state, with Republicans calling on Democrats to call on Jones to drop out of the contest.
A series of internal polls from both sides of the aisle have shown a tightening race following the unearthed texts from Jones.
Jones’s campaign released a poll conducted by Hart Research showing him leading Miyares 46 percent support to 45 percent in the wake of the scandal. Another poll released by the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) that was conducted by Cygnal showed Miyares leading Jones 46 percent support to 44 percent. And a third survey released by the Trafalgar Group, a right-leaning firm, showed Miyares leading with 49 percent support to Jones’s 43 percent.
