Lady Luck was with Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on a trip to Las Vegas, as the governor won more than $1 million playing cards in Las Vegas in 2024.
The winnings were reported on the governor’s tax returns, which were released by his campaign on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Pritzker’s Form-1040, he reported income of $1.425 million from gambling in 2024.
According to the form, the total taxable income on the joint federal return for the governor and for Illinois first lady MK Pritzker was nearly $5.9 million.
In 2024, trusts benefitting Pritzker paid $4.5 million in Illinois taxes and $30.2 million in federal taxes, and the couple made $3.3 million in personal charitable contributions, according to a press release.
Asked about the winnings during a press conference Thursday, Pritzker said he was “incredibly lucky” on a trip to Las Vegas with his wife and a group of friends, and that he won the money while playing card games at a casino.
“I was incredibly lucky. You have to be, frankly, going to a casino anywhere,” he said. “It was in Las Vegas. I like to play cards.”
Pritzker said the winnings were cumulative from the year, and did not specify which games he played to win the money, but he said that he was fortunate to have left the casino before being tempted to push his luck at the tables.
“It happened in one trip. Most of the time, anybody that’s been to a casino, you win, and anyone who’s played cards in a casino, you often play for too long and lose whatever you won,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to have to leave before that happened.”
Pritzker also mentioned the Chicago Poker Challenge, a charity event he sponsors to benefit the Illinois Holocaust Museum. He praised the event’s success and its ability to raise funds for civil rights activism.
As for what the gambling winnings could do to his political fortunes, Pritzker dismissed the idea that such an attack would be harmful to his candidacy for governor or potentially for other offices.
“No. I think people know that when I got elected, and they’ve known for some time, that I’ve been very fortunate in my life,” he said. “I’m focused on running for reelection as governor, that’s the only thing I’m focused on politically. Most importantly, I’m focused on my job as governor, and protecting people from the unlawful acts of Stephen Miller, Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, Tom Homan and Gregory Bovino.”
